Lieberman compares terrorists to Nazis, calls for unity

Lieberman compares terrorists to Nazis, calls for unity

WATERBURY, Conn. -- U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman, in his first campaign appearance since launching his independent re-election campaign, likened terrorists to Nazis and called for Republicans and Democrats to work together to combat them.

"We are at war with a brutal enemy," said Lieberman during a campaign stop Thursday at a Waterbury pizza joint. "How the heck can we be in a battle in which we are fighting as Democrats and Republicans against each other when these terrorists certainly don't distinguish based on party affiliation? They want to kill any and all of us."

"I'm worried that too many people, both in politics and out, don't appreciate the seriousness of the threat to American security and the evil of the enemy that faces us - more evil or as evil as Nazism and probably more dangerous that the Soviet Communists we fought during the long Cold War," Lieberman said.

...

"If we just pick up like Ned Lamont wants us to do, get out by a date certain, it will be taken as a tremendous victory by the same people who wanted to blow up these planes in this plot hatched in England. It will strengthen them and they will strike again."

I guess these are the new GOP "talking points," sorta like calling people you don't like "commie" during the 1950s and 1960s. Hell, the neo-Con fascists still call anyone to the left of them "commies."

I smell desperation in this new Repub strategy...

BUSH SAYS FOILED PLANE PLOT "STARK REMINDER" THAT UNITED STATES "AT WAR WITH ISLAMIC FASCISTS"

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060810/ap_on_go_pr_wh/bush

The president laid the blame for the would-be attack squarely on al-Qaida-type terrorism.

........"This nation is at war with Islamic fascists who will use any means to destroy those of us who love freedom, to hurt our nation," he said, his remarks carried live on television.

Bush spoke for just two minutes and took no questions. His brief message, aside from focusing on the "stark reminder" of the U.S.-led global war on terror, mostly appeared to be a promise that his administration was working to keep citizens safe.

"The American people need to know we live in a dangerous world, but our government will do everything we can to protect our people from those dangers," the president said...........

Chertoff: Plot 'suggestive' of al-Qaida

Chertoff: Plot 'suggestive' of al-Qaida

By LARA JAKES JORDAN, Associated Press Writer 6 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - The terror plot disrupted in London is "suggestive of an al-Qaida plot," Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said Thursday as the government issued its highest terrorism alert ever for commercial flights from Britain to the United States.

"There is currently no indication of any plotting in the United States," Chertoff said, but the government raised the threat level for all domestic and international flights.

Chertoff said officials cannot assume that the terror operation in Britain had been completely thwarted.

The U.S. government banned all liquids and gels from flights, including toothpaste, makeup, suntan lotion. Baby formula and medicines were exempted.

Chertoff said the alleged plot "was sophisticated, it had a lot of members and it was international in scope." He added, however, that "because the investigation is still underway we cannot yet form a definitive conclusion.".........

Chertoff said it was in "final stages." This "expert" on CNN just said
that he was told by a security person in UK that the terrorists were still trying to figure out which chemicals they wanted to use, whether to premix them, mix them on board, etc. That doesn't sound like "final stages" to me. To me, Final Stages means it has been figured out and rehearsed by the ones chosen to do it and reservations are being made to get everyone on the right flights to be in the air over the Atlantic or another ocean at the same time.

And he'll play well in places like Waterbury and the Naugatuck valley with it.

These are the old "Reagan Democrats" and they like a simplistic approach and I think there's an urge there to just stomp on all these big mean terrorists who are out to get us. Never mind the facts.

It's going to be very, very ugly.

Some strategist (I'm not) needs to figure out how Lamont avoids being pushed into playing defense on this one. Doing that is death to his campaign.

I didn't bother to go to the article, just more puke talking points from a complete Republican whore. Rove must be running his campaign now and I wouldn't trust this turn-coat to caucus with Dems if he does trick the Ct. independents to go along with his repuke constituency in returning him to congress. These are exactly the words that Ned Lamont should be saying - not the guy that we just fired after many years of pretty damned good loyalty.

It's also a sentiment that some here at DU have tried to express but have been shouted down, ridiculed and sometimes banned. We hate Bush so much we're slitting our own throats.

We can hate Bush and terrorism too. If we don't figure that out soon our chances in Nov and 2008 could be very slim. This is how they're going to beat us down - that we'd rather hate Bush than defend America. Please don't let them.

Did he forget that the Soviet Communists had a couple million man army and enough nukes to obliterate the world?

Did he forget that the Nazis were very efficient at exterminating masses of people?

Terrorists come in all flavors. Having an army in the midst of a civil war does little good in finding this new enemy.

To suggest that today's terrorism threat is anywhere close to the dangers that this country has faced in the past is delusional rhetoric expressed for political gain.

33. NYT: Lieberman Seizes on Terror Arrests to Attack Rival
Senator Joseph I. Lieberman seized on the terror arrests in Britain today to attack his Democratic rival, Ned Lamont, saying that Mr. Lamont’s goals for ending the war in Iraq would constitute a “victory” for extremists, including those accused of plotting to blow up airliners traveling between Britain and the United States.

“If we just pick up like Ned Lamont wants us to do, get out by a date certain, it will be taken as a tremendous victory by the same people who wanted to blow up these planes in this plot hatched in England,” Mr. Lieberman said at a campaign event at lunchtime in Waterbury, Conn. “It will strengthen them and they will strike again.”

(snip)

In a telephone interview from his vacation home in Maine, Mr. Lamont said he was disappointed with the personal tone Mr. Lieberman’s remarks, and questioned the connection between the Iraq war and the new terrorist plot. He also continued his strategy of trying to link Mr. Lieberman’s views with those of the Bush administration, whose approach the senator has tended to support in the fight against terrorism.

“Wow,” Mr. Lamont said, after asking a reporter to read Mr. Lieberman’s remark about him. “That comment sounds an awful lot like Vice President Cheney’s comment on Wednesday. Both of them believe our invasion of Iraq has a lot to do with 9/11. That’s a false premise.”

They didn't have terrorists in Iraq until the Bush war on Iraq. Now they are all over the place according to our leaders.

It is one of those chicken and egg thingys. Do we create terrorists by invading countries? Who was in Iraq first? Bush/military or the terrorists?

48. Yep, those guys waited for Lamont to win before they turned into
terrorist plotters. Day before yesteday, they were just auto mechanics. It's amazing what a Democratic primary in Connecticut can do to people! God forbid, more Democrats win! The terrorists will start showing up in Iraq and Pakistan and Saudi Arabia and Iran and Lebanon and Syria and...

90. We were mostly silent the first two years
and the terrorism became worse by the day. The war lovers are looking for others to blame their failures on.

To decide on a tenative date to pull out, doesn't mean we have to tell the world.

The only ones who need to know are the Iraqi leaders and our leaders.

I'm not sure Lamont (is that a French name?) has the cajones to handle real terror. As much as I despise this war and the circumstances behind it, we are in it and we need people in charge who are not afraid to go the distance.

58. Terrah! Terrah! Terrah! Boo!
:)

Let's see, Bush, Lieb, Mehlman and all Repukes everwhere are cashing in on the alleged terror plot. Manna from heaven. Or was it a gift they baked for themselves? But I digress. The most important questions should be:

What have the Liebermans and Bushes of the world done these past five years to make us safer?

Port security? Nope. Less secure. In fact, our ports and even inspections are managed by Middle East countries!
Homeland Security Department? You're doing a GREAT job, Chertoff!
Patriot Act? Innocent Quakers being harrassed and jailed.

Oops! What about the grandaddy of terror, the self-proclaimed instigator of 9/11, Osama Bin Laden? They don't think about him much. He's probably vacationing in Aspen when not in the hole with Cheney.

Please don't buy the Red Alert bullshit.

60. This whole commie/fascist thing..
..is the new meme for the Republicans. Even Bush is using it. Hey, guys, little hint for you: the people we're fighting are mad at us because WE'RE the one who went over and messed with their governments, not the other way around. Remember the government in Iran we helped overthrow? In Iraq? In Pakistan? In Afghanistan? How about how we prop up the amazingly brutal regime in Saudi Arabia?

87. Okay...
How about how we prop up the amazingly brutal regime in Saudi Arabia?

I am by no means an expert but I have a different view that comes from actually living in the KSA for 6 years.

Saudi "insurgents" or "terrorists" or whatever are mad at us for supporting the royal family because they believe the King is far too lax. If anything, Saudi would be an even more brutal and repressive place if the clerics and their supporters had their way. The terrorists aren't killing people to gain freedom or democracy, they're terrorizing the local populations to prevent freedom and democracy.

If we hadn't been busy propping up ME governents over the last 4 decades they might have moderated themselves over the years but it wouldn't have prevented religious nutcases from the stepping on the path they're on today.

72. "Probably more dangerous than the Soviet Communists...":
Lieberman is sounding more delusional and hysterical by the day. Unless I somehow missed the news that Islamic militants suddenly and miraculously acquired one of the world's largest nuclear arsenals. I suppose this is another instance of the belief that intent to kill on a massive scale is the same as the ability to kill on a massive scale.

84. Dear Traitor Joe: Iraq had nothing to do with the attack on 9/11.
If you want to fight terrorists, take the fight to the terrorists.

Don't use up all your country's energy and resources chasing windmills, like we are doing in Iraq.

And Joe? Just where is that rascal bin Laden, anyway?

You sound just as foolish as a republican.
