"Investigators: Pair with passenger info, phones linked to terror"
http://www.ohio.com/mld/beaconjournal/news/state/15237015.htm

"Investigators in southeast Ohio said they were working to unravel how two Michigan men charged with supporting terrorism came to have airplane passenger lists and airport security information.

Osama Sabhi Abulhassan, 20, and Ali Houssaiky, 20, both of the Detroit suburb of Dearborn... ...Deputies stopped the two on a traffic violation Tuesday and found the flight documents along with $11,000 cash and 12 phones in their car, Sheriff Larry Mincks said."

more rove-ian bullshit is my take on this. i can just imagine how a guy named 'osama' would be treated by the gestapo.

4. If it was a minor traffic
violation, why did they search the car?

This is just more election season terror news. We'll see all kinds of them during the next two months.

5. That is more than slightly suspicious
Passenger data? That's not something they got at Google. I'd be asking these guys a LOT of questions too. Just because we have a bunch of fascists running this country does not automatically mean that there are not a bunch of people out there who would love to cause us harm. One may even be the cause of the other, but that doesn't mean that the cops should be sending these guys off with a kiss on the cheek.

6. What would happen if . . .
These two guys were let go without any questioning and then the did commit an act of terror? I think a lot of people on DU would be talking about how stupid the police were for not questioning them further.

7. $11,000 and 12 phones is grounds for either a terror charge or
a some kind of small business enterprise. Take your pick.

9. They didn't exactly say passenger list, and anyway,
Edited on Thu Aug-10-06 12:00 PM by The_Casual_Observer
what possible good would an old passenger list do? They are only good for the duration of a flight. That part makes no logical sense & is probably wrong.

11. They did not indicate that it was an old list . . .
I believe a flight manifest does include passenger information.

12. Needless to say, such lists are utterly worthless. Anyhow,
"flight documents" could mean just about anything.

15. I thought it was manifest . . .
which is not worthless, especially if someone specific was being targeted.

Two laundered money for Hizbollah -Ohio prosecutor

CHICAGO, Aug 10 (Reuters) - Two 20-year-old men arrested in Ohio were being held on Thursday on charges of money laundering on behalf of Hizbollah, authorities said.

The two men, Ali Houssaiky and Osama Abulhassan, of Dearborn, Michigan, were apprehended on Tuesday in Marietta, Ohio, during a traffic stop and found carrying $11,000 in cash, 12 cell phones, airline passenger lists and information on airport security, a spokesman for the Washington County prosecutor's office said.

Authorities said the men admitted to buying hundreds of telephones and reselling them in Dearborn.

A map marking Wal-Mart stores from Ohio to South Carolina was also found in their sedan, a spokesman said.

...

The two men's alleged tie to Hizbollah was not detailed by authorities. Each was being held on $200,000 bond and neither had yet entered a plea to the charge, which carries a sentence of up to 18 months in prison.

13. I wonder if Wal-Mart produces that map
They let RVs stay overnight in their parking lots, so they probably have maps for that purpose.

They may have got a good deal on phones (possibly hot) and re-sold them. That may account for the 12 phones and $11,000.

An airline passenger list could mean anything, as could information on airline security. When I book a flight, I get a partial list of passengers (me and my wife, say) and some instructions on airline security (don't pack such and such, watch your luggage, etc).

Innocent stuff can be made to seem suspicious, especially if you have a Muslim sounding name.

14. Quotes from suspects family from Detroit Free Press
Houssaiky's family members were shocked by the allegations, said Imad Hamad, regional director of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, who met with them Wednesday. Houssaiky and Abulhassan work in the cell phone business and were on a normal business route that was legitimate, Hamad said the family told him.

"I hope this is a case where the government is not overreacting, overreaching and over-reading," Hamad said. "This is sensitive and serious. Nobody should rush to judgment."
