Edited on Wed Aug-09-06 02:20 PM by RamboLiberal
H'mmm, last night report in Jerusalem Post via Saudia Arabia had it as Israel.

http://www.cnn.com/2006/LAW/08/09/sailor.charge/index.html

A sailor facing espionage and desertion charges has been held at a Norfolk, Virginia, brig since March, the U.S. Navy said Wednesday.

Ariel Weinmann, 21, is suspected of having worked on behalf of Russia, said military sources close to the case.

He was likely to have had access to technical manuals and other material on how submarine systems work, Navy sources said. It's not believed that anyone else in the Navy worked with him, they said.

The fire control technician third class, assigned to the submarine USS Albuquerque, attempted on three occasions to pass classified information to foreign agents, according to the charges against him.

Those times include March 2005 in Bahrain; October 2005 in Vienna, Austria; and March 2006 in Mexico City, Mexico, according to the charges.

2. More info
snip>
Petty Officer Ariel Weinmann is a Fire Control Technician 3rd Class with the United States Navy who it was revealed has been held in secret for four months facing espionage, desertion and other charges. The case is notable as an espionage case where the Navy and trial court officials have denied access to basic information, including the court docket. Weinmann was arrested March 25, 2006

A docket listing Weinmann’s preliminary hearing, (Article 32) was never produced nor would the navy confirm when the hearing was held. Officials have refused to produce a charge sheet which would detail the accusations against the sailor.

Weinmann who enlisted in July 2003, is accused of deserting July 3, 2005, according to Theodore Brown, a spokesman for Fleet Forces Command. While refusing to release any supporting documents, Brown stated that Weinmann is charged with failure to obey an order and acts prejudicial to good order and discipline in addition to espionage and desertion.

The counts alleges that in March 2005, in or near Manama, Bahrain, Weinmann did "attempt to communicate, deliver or transmit" classified information relating to national defense to "a representative, officer, agent or employee of a foreign government." Months later Weinmann is alleged to have "communicate, deliver or transmit" information classified as confidential and secret to a representative of a foreign government in Vienna, Austria, around October 19, 2005, and around March 19, 2006 near Mexico City, Mexico.<1>

and they have been doing their best to heat it back up, new names to hate same old BS. And looks like the hard-liners in Israel are willing to make the rest of their people the objects to be killed in the cross-fire.

6. The Saudi press reported that he was spying for Israel (2 stories)
Weinmann stopped in Israel before he came to America! The tight-lipped Navy may be a clue as to the Jonathan Pollard type of sensitivity of this case.

Report: US sailor spied for Israel
By DAVID KEYES

A US Navy sailor, Ariel J. Weinmann, is suspected of spying for Israel and has been held in prison for four months, according to an article published Monday in the Saudi daily Al-Watan. It reported that Weinmann is being held at a military base in Virginia on suspicion of espionage and desertion.

According to the navy, Weinmann was apprehended on March 26 "after it was learned that he had been listed as a deserter by his command." Though initial information released by the navy makes no mention of it, Al-Watan reported that he was returning from an undisclosed "foreign country." American sources close to the Defense Department told Al-Watan that Israel was the country in question.

Petty officer held in secret for 4 months

NORFOLK — A petty officer has been in the Norfolk Naval Station brig for more than four months facing espionage, desertion and other charges, but the Navy has refused to release details of the case.

The case against Fire Control Technician 3rd Class Ariel J. Weinmann is indicative of the secrecy surrounding the Navy military court here, where public affairs and trial court officials have denied access to basic information including the court docket – a listing of cases to be heard.

After months of requests, the Navy this week provided The Virginian-Pilot with Weinmann’s name, rank and the charges he faces.

In an e-mail, Theodore Brown, a spokesman for Fleet Forces Command, said, “It is sometimes a challenge to balance the desires of the media, the public’s right to know, and the rights of an individual accused of a crime.”

“In this case,” he concluded, the command “is attempting to provide as much unclassified information as is reasonable, while maintaining an appropriate concern for the privacy of the individual involved. ”
