Ex-Policeman admits Civil-Rights Crimes

HAGERSTOWN, Md. -- A former police officer pleaded guilty Tuesday to two civil-rights charges for making anonymous death threats against black school children and Hagerstown's first black city council member.

Jeffrey S. Shifler, 42, entered the pleas in federal court in Baltimore and faces up to 20 years in prison and $500,000 in fines at his Dec. 8 sentencing.

"When a law enforcement officer makes racist threats against government officials and school students, it is a threat to the very fabric of our society," U.S. Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein said.

Shifler was working for the Boonsboro Police Department when he made a series of calls to Hagerstown school officials and threatened to shoot black students, according to court records. The calls prompted several school lockdowns.

2. My brother was hazed off of the Montgomery County police in 1970

for not being a racist. They took him to a black area one night and left him there. He walked miles to the station and turned his badge in. No black people harmed him. Montgomery county was still largely rural then and drew a lot of it's force from racist inbred stock from the upper part of the county. I believe many of the abusive prison guards in the shameful Abu Graib business were from Hagerstown and up and down the Apalachias from there.

The KKK had huge rallies in the Frederick area after the Republicans took presidential power with actor Reagan. I have written about that here before so won't drone on any further other than to say that I think the only real news in this story is that this story is in the news... A ray of hope.

My 'hood' growing up was Silver Spring, then Kensington and Damascus for a brief time before I left forever at 17 smtpgirl.
