SAO PAULO, Brazil -- President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has widened his lead over his main challenger ahead of October's election, according to a poll released Tuesday.
The Sensus poll said 48 percent of those questioned intended to vote for Silva, up from 44 percent in July.
Silva's main rival, former Sao Paulo Gov. Geraldo Alckmin, meanwhile lost ground, garnering 20 percent support, down from 27 percent in July, the poll said.
The survey attributed Silva's increased lead to an improving economy, which is on target to post a 3.5 percent growth in gross domestic product this year.
