Pataki outlines energy alternatives for U.S.
(AP) — New York Gov. George Pataki offered a national energy plan Monday designed to drive down dependence on foreign oil -- and energize his own presidential ambitions for 2008.

Mr. Pataki said the high price of gasoline threatens the nation's security as well as the economy, and offered a 10-year plan based principally on tax incentives for manufacturers to develop fuel-efficient cars and for energy producers to increase the availability of ethanol and other alternatives to oil.

...snip...

A Republican who is considering a run for president, Mr. Pataki outlined his ideas for a new national energy plan in a speech to the National Press Club.

...snip...

Mr. Pataki said the three key elements of his proposal are tax credits to encourage auto makers to produce more efficient vehicles; promoting development of alternative fuels and offering tax incentives to boost installation of renewable fuel pumps at service stations.

7. Pataki 2008
If there's one thing liberals and conservatives can agree on, it's this...Pataki for President is a joke. Personally, I don't think he's really running for President...I think he's running for cabinet position. There's no way that the GOP would nominate him, and there's no way he'd win a general election.

2. If the Dems don't make getting off the oil habit their #1 issue ....
... they're going to lose a major opportunity. I'm astounded that they haven't been hammering this for months.

4. The question you should ask is how many of the beltway Dems get

...how much money from the oil and auto interests. That will determine what their stand on alternative energy will be. To my mind most of the Dems in the power structure of the party are little different from the repugs. Our real hope is that the grassroots of the party will take over. The next two elections may make a huge difference.

9. *WE* need to decide what "Democrat" stands for ...
... and then find the leaders who best match our priorities. We need to move away from the personality-centric selection of our leadership, and start looking for people with proven insight. (Need I be more direct in who we need at the top? :) )

10. Yes, please do be more direct. You may find you're not alone.

I think that one way of finding consencus is to put forward our particular choices with the reasons we find those choices to be best.

And then let others put forward their particular choices and their reasons.

This way we can engage in a reasoned debate, and not a free for all.

That's supposed to be the democratic and Democratic way.
