PM launches UJC campaign: This war fought by all Jews
PM Ehud Olmert launches UJC campaign to raise millions for Israel; ‘this is the time when all of us can show the kind of solidarity which is so unique to the Jewish people,’ he says in broadcast from Jerusalem

http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3287851,00.html

<snip>

"Prime Minister Ehud Olmert launched on Monday the United Jewish Communities – Federations of North America (UJC) Emergency Campaign in a broadcast from Jerusalem.

The Emergency Campaign is set to raise hundreds of millions of dollars for Israel. Karnit Goldwasser, wife of abducted soldier Ehud Goldwasser, also took part in the broadcast.

“I know you are all thinking we are fighting against Hizbullah ; let’s face it, the State of Israel is fighting against the Iranians and the Syrians, who are using Hizbullah in order to attack Israel from the north,” Olmert said during the broadcast.

“This is a war which is fought by all the Israelis. I believe that this is a war fought by all the Jews. This is the time when all of us can show the kind of solidarity which is so unique to the Jewish people. This is the time when we expect you, our friends from across all the communities in America and in the world, to come over here, and share with us the burden and the challenge.”

1. Bad Idea
One doesn't have to ask for Solidarity--if it exists to begin with. Cannot be manufactured after the fact, either.

2. Sounds like a recruiting pitch
"... we expect you, our friends from across all the communities in America and in the world, to come over here, and share with us the burden and the challenge.”

Does Olmert really want me and my great aunt Enid to enlist? Does he have any idea how silly she would look in combat boots?

4. Isn't that almost what Mel Gibson said?
Oh no, that's right, he said all wars were started by the Jews.

Just re-arrange the words I guess....

6. For God's sake, aren't they getting enough from our
government??

Israel is a country, not a religion.

And we are Americans first.

We may not have the same interests here - I don't think we do.

And we probably don't have the same interests here until our kids are out of the way, either.

I wish the best for Israel, I do - but we already paid a lot. We have our own problems right now.

Joe

7. Exploitation for a failed cause.
I don't believe the leaders of Israel are winning support for their campaign against their Arab neighbors. Is this so different than a gathering cry jihad? Hopefully the crazy fundies will heed this call. I don't think too many American (or any other country) Jews will.

8. This Jew says F*** You, Olmert.
Hugely disproportionate military response, killing scores of civilians and intentionally causing a humanitarian crisis, oh, and by the way, inflaming the entire Arab world further?

You'll get no solidaity with me.

17. Thank you, and all your fellow peace-loving Jewish compatriots.
You are right to say that - and I know you get a lot of crap for it, so rest assured we appreciate your voices for truth and justice.

10. Anyone who thinks this war is "just" should go fight.
Though Olmert should not expect all Jewish peoples to come to the aid of his nation just because they are Jewish.

Ultimatly, we should work towards peace.

Let's have a ceasefire first and then we'll talk about solidarity!

12. This is yet another attempt
to blur the line between adherents of Judaism and Israeli politics. It's a dangerous one at that. Jews are NOT a monolith.

15. well
a lot of it is steeped in history. Also, there are sometimes attacks on Jews in the US but overall they are generally accepted. Some prejudice but not unbearable. However, in many parts of Europe and other places of the world anti-semitism runs much deeper and this causes the "clannish" attitude of which you speak. Also, Jews are a very small minority and only make up a majority in one country. I think that Jews around the world are comforted by the fact that they know there is one country they can go to and be free from oppression because of the fact they are Jewish. This is the cause for all the solidarity. Many Jews left Russia all through the 90's due to severe rewpression and discrimination.

16. I wish the USA would force a cease fire. All this carnage only creates
more and more carnage. I am just sick of them killing civilians on both sides. Its sickening.
