RUSSIAN President Vladimir Putin told British Prime Minister Tony Blair today "of the need for an immediate halt to hostilities" in Lebanon, the Kremlin said.

The message was delivered during a telephone conversation initiated by Mr Blair.

"Vladimir Putin underlined the need for an immediate halt to the hostilities in Lebanon which have already claimed hundreds of victims and taken the region to the edge of a humanitarian catastrophe," the Kremlin statement said.

The two leaders had noted "the importance of a global settlement in the Middle East and the resumption of a political peace process".
