Former Astronaut, 85, And Wife Hospitalized, But 'Extremely Stable'

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Aug. 5, 2006

CBS/AP) Former astronaut John Glenn and his wife were hurt in a traffic accident Friday night in Columbus, Ohio, police said.

The 85-year-old former senator and his 86-year-old wife, Annie, are in fair condition at a hospital in Columbus.

Both were being evaluated in the emergency room and were "extremely stable," the nursing supervisor told The Columbus Dispatch early Saturday morning.

Police said their car collided with another Friday night on the northeast side of Columbus.

The driver of the other car told The Dispatch that she was headed east and Glenn was driving west. Amy Myers said her car and Glenn's collided as he tried to turn left onto a ramp for Interstate 270.

Sen. Glenn was "very sincerely sorry," Myers said.

Get well, Senator!!!

1. The Left Stuff?
Amy Myers said her car and Glenn's collided as he tried to turn left onto a ramp for Interstate 270.

He's supposed to have the Right Stuff. :)

All kidding aside, I hope John Glenn and his wife recover.

2. He was always better at driving down the center than turning left, IIRC.
Get well, Senator. America needs the few heroes we have left.

-(In WW2) Glenn flew Corsairs over the Marshall Islands, specifically Maloelap, where he attacked anti-aircraft gunnery and dropped bombs. In 1945 Glenn was transferred to Naval Air Station Patuxent River, where he was promoted to captain by the war's end.

-On July 16, 1957, Glenn completed the first supersonic transcontinental flight in a Vought F8U "Crusader." The California to New York flight took 3 hours, 23 minutes and 8 seconds. As Glenn passed over his hometown, a childhood neighbor reportedly ran to the Glenn house shouting "Johnny dropped a bomb! Johnny dropped a bomb!" as the supersonic boom shook the town.

-In 1959 Glenn was assigned to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) as one of the original group of Mercury astronauts for the Project Mercury. During this time, he remained an officer in the Marine Corps. He piloted the first American manned orbital mission aboard Friendship 7 on February 20, 1962.

-His fame and political gifts were noted by the Kennedys, and he became a personal friend of the Kennedy family; after the assassination of John F. Kennedy, Jackie Kennedy asked Glenn to give the news to the Kennedy children on November 22, 1963.

-Glenn remained close to the Kennedy family and was with Sen. Robert F. Kennedy when he was killed.

-In the 1974 general election, Glenn defeated Republican Mayor of Cleveland Ralph Perk, beginning a Senate career that would continue until 1999. In 1980, Glenn won re-election to the seat, defeating Republican challenger Jim Betts. In 1986, Glenn defeated challenger U.S. Representative Tom Kindness.

-Glenn lifted off for a second space flight on October 29, 1998, on Space Shuttle Discovery's STS-95 in order to study the effects of space flight on the elderly. At age 77, Glenn became the oldest person ever to go into space. Glenn's participation in the nine-day mission was criticized by some (i.e. REPUBLICANS) in the space community as a junket for a politician. Others noted that Glenn's flight offered valuable research on weightlessness and other aspects of space flight on the same person at two points in life thirty-five years apart—by far the farthest interval between space flights by the same person.

11. Godspeed Indeed
I recall mt republican brother complaining when Glenn took the shuttle flight at age 70 - he claimed it was politics only. I asked him if he thought Newt would be a better candidate. That was pretty much the end of the argument.

15. As a former constituent of Newt, I have
no problem with his taking a trip on the shuttle -- as long as it's one-way.

16. I had my picture taken with Senator Glenn when he was stumping in
Fairbury, Nebraska for Bobby Kennedy because I happened to be born February 20th, 1962, 2 minutes before his splashdown. My moment of fame.

19. It was clearly the other guy's fault.
If John Freaking Glenn apologized and admitted responisibility after a car crash, then he was just being polite. This guy is one of the few actual HEROES I've ever had. If you paid me minimum wage, I'd happily follow him around for the rest of his days throwing rose petals on the ground before he takes a step.

I'd need Health and Dental, too, though Vision is negotiable.

If he wanted to smash up my car with a sledge hammer, I'd gladly open the garage door for him.

Read it, and weep at your own insignificance and unworthiness:
