U.S. enforcements arrive in Baghdad

By SINAN SALAHEDDIN, Associated Press Writer 16 minutes ago

BAGHDAD, Iraq - U.S. reinforcements sent to Baghdad to help quell sectarian violence and clamp down on other attacks took up positions in a restive neighborhood Saturday, while two bombs at a market northeast of the city wounded eight people.

The 3,700 soldiers of the Army's 172nd Stryker Brigade moved in from the northern city of Mosul to bolster U.S. and Iraqi security forces already in the city.

Several Stryker armored fighting vehicles were seen Saturday in Baghdad's mostly Sunni neighborhood of Ghazaliyah in the western part. Iraqi police used loudspeakers to encourage residents to go about their business and reopen shops because the troops were there to protect them.

Dozens of people are killed almost every day in
Iraq, mostly in sectarian violence between Shiite and Sunni extremists that has escalated since a Shiite shrine was bombed Feb. 22 in Samarra.

1. Sat. One more US troop died.

.....The U.S. military command said a soldier assigned to the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force died Saturday "due to non-hostile action" in Anbar province, west of Baghdad. It did not provide details.

2. How is this any different than the iron fisted rule that Saddam used
to prevent sectarian violence?

Except that there are now thousands of dead, untold and endless suffering, tremendous ill-will towards the US, a ME in turmoil, and trillions of wasted dollars.

7. How is it different?
1) Saddam was more effective.

2) Saddam killed fewer Iraqis.

3) It cost less.

Other than that, I couldn't say.

10. Meanwhile, back in Mosul, seems all hell is breaking loose

The son of a friend of mine is among those being moved from Mosul to Baghdad. He e-mailed her a while back saying the Iraqis in Mosul were friendly and thankful to have the US troops there. That may (or may not) have been true in Mosul. I worry that he may "let his guard down" in Baghdad if it is true.

I think he might have been feeding his mom a line of BS to put her mind at ease. Either way, I hope he stays safe and makes it home. Sad thing is that when I told her that we need to bring them home, she disagreed and said his e-mail showed they were making progress and we can't just abandon the Iraqi people. (Yeah, they're Republicans.) :-(

12. US troops roll into Baghdad to stem sectarian bloodshed (AFP)
US troops roll into Baghdad to stem sectarian bloodshed

by Jay Deshmukh1 hour, 48 minutes ago

US reinforcements have rolled into some of the most violent districts of Baghdad in a fleet of 17-tonne armoured troop carriers as part of a major push to halt Iraq's slide towards civil war.

Units of the 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team deployed in flashpoint districts in the west of the capital Sunday, which in recent weeks has seen hundreds of civilians murdered by sectarian death squads.

As they arrived, the blasts of two roadside bombs echoed around the city, while security forces recovered 17 corpses across Baghdad; four Iraqi soldiers and 13 civilians who had been tortured and shot dead, police said.

One roadside bomb wounded two Iraqi police commandos and two civilians in the Jihad neighbourhood, an interior ministry official said.

22. Wasn't there a major securiy sweep of Baghdad just a few months ago?
I seem to recall that there was a highly - touted major deployment of US and Iraqi army troops to Baghdad just a few months ago, with road blocks all over the city, house to house searches, Apache helicopters in the air, all of it claimed to eliminate the terrorism threat in the city. I guess that worked out real well.
