Human Rights Watch catalogues Israeli war crimes in Lebanon
Sat, 2006-08-05

The US-based Human Rights Watch (HRW) accused Israel of committing war crimes in a 50-page report released yesterday. Titled “Fatal Strikes: Israel’s indiscriminate attacks against civilians in Lebanon”, the report provided additional proof that the Zionist state is deliberately targeting civilians as part of its criminal strategy to terrorize and drive out the population of southern Lebanon.

“The pattern of attacks during the Israeli offensive in Lebanon suggests that the failures cannot be explained or dismissed as mere accidents,” the report explained. “he extent of the pattern and seriousness of the consequences indicate the commission of war crimes.

HRW called on United Nations secretary general Kofi Annan to establish an International Commission of Inquiry to investigate Israel’s war crimes and to “formulate recommendations with a view to holding accountable those who violated the law”.

The report also produced further evidence that the Israeli military has systematically covered up and lied about its attacks on Lebanese civilians. “Human Rights Watch found no cases in which Hezbollah deliberately used civilians as shields to protect them from retaliatory IDF attack,” it stated, contradicting Israeli claims. “In none of the cases of civilian deaths documented in this report is there evidence to suggest that Hezbollah forces or weapons were in or near the area that the IDF targeted during or just prior to the attack.”

2. Thanks for showing up, Vice President Cheney!
:eyes:

Personally, I'd rather read HRW's actual report and evaluate it on my own, rather than taking the word of an "Israel can do no wrong" zealot on the one hand, or a news summary from an Asian newspaper that might want to give the report a spin of its own on the other. (On the latter, I'm suspicious of any news story that refers to Israel as the "Zionist state," especially in the lead paragraph. However, I consider Human Rights Watch a very reliable organization, and am curious as to what they themselves have to report.)

5. Israeli Govt. & Military claims that Hezbulla is at fault
for the civilian deaths because the hide among civilians and fire rockets from civilian areas does not hold up to the facts. I believe that Israel is attempting to rid an area of Lebanon near Israeli border of all human life.

10. Be interested to see what they based their report on
- Any investagotors on the ground?
- Any specific events
- Any dialog with the IDF as to why a particular target was attacked.

There is a great deal of fog of war issues right now. Israeli censorship and hyperbole from all concerned are not helping the truth come out either. I was sent a link this AM to an article purportedly from a French source that said there was a rocket launcher on the building bombed in Qana and that the Hezbollah stocked the building with children. With that sort of stuff floating around and its exact opposite from others, without independent review, including potenial FLIR video from the IAF, claims of war crimes are at best premature. The attacks themselves are not prima facie evidence of war crimes as some assert.

I note also the lack of a similar complaint about the rocket attacks in Israel or the use of civilian and UN shields by Hezbollah.

about how bad the Israelis have it ......bullshit is what I say they practically destroyed Lebanon and killed many civilians but nothing can compare to the loss of life of an Israeli.
