Iranians Coming To Santa Clara Conference Sent Home

POSTED: 8:08 pm PDT August 4, 2006

SANTA CLARA -- Members of an Iranian university's international alumni association are expressing frustration that more than 100 visa holders traveling to the United States to attend the group's fourth reunion in Santa Clara have had their visas revoked.

Elahe Enssani, a spokeswoman for the Sharif University of Technology Alumni Association conference, which began today at the Santa Clara Hyatt Regency, said all 12 of the conference registrants who were arriving at San Francisco International Airport were denied entry and that only 15 of 105 visa applicants who had hoped to come to the conference have been allowed entry into the U.S.

The first visa holder coming to the conference was turned around July 25 at Los Angeles International Airport, and since then only a few registrants have been allowed into the country, she said. Two of the visa holders arriving at SFO were turned around immediately and sent back to London within two hours, while the others were held at the airport, according to Enssani. Being turned around has obviously had a financial impact on those denied entry, but it also has affected them emotionally, Enssani said.

6. Or certainly Karen Hughes. This looks like it might be right up her alley
After all bigfoot was tasked by President Bush to promote America's values including educational and cultural affairs.

5. Another Reagan era innovation: make sure Americans do not hear ..
.. from the rest of the world, because this undermines the official bu**sh**.

I have no love for the fundamentalist crackpots now ruling Iran, who came to power as the result of popular reaction against decades of CIA-sponsored oppression: a number seem to be hateful anti-semites. But the Bush administration can't content itself with the truth: we have been bombarded with constant lies, claiming Iranian support for the Taliban or Iranian violations of the NPT.

It's generally a good thing if foreigners visit, so that we can meet each other and take steps towards understanding. Our ruling junta, however, cannot tolerate the idea that someone might contradict them ... and so we have "preventative" visa revocations ...

7. Appalling
It might seem like a small thing but it's not. There's no telling where this kind of thing can lead.

We need to keep a good dialogue with Iranian civilians. The government in power right now in Iran is absolutely sickening and anything we can do to turn people against them would be a good thing. We should establish good relations with the people of Iran.

9. wondering what other Iranian citizens they will exclude
My Persian grandmother visits for 6-8 months at a time (green card). Also, my aunt. Wonder if the small-minded pissants will see them as a threat, too?
