New poll spells woe for Joe, joy for his foe

BY HELEN KENNEDY
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

With just five days to go before the much-watched Connecticut Democratic primary, anti-war protest candidate Ned Lamont has surged to a dramatic 13-point lead over centrist Sen. Joe Lieberman in a new poll.

And in a second big blow to Lieberman, the 300,000-strong 1199 SEIU United Healthcare Workers union in New York endorsed Lamont and promised to mobilize foot soldiers for him this weekend.

Both sides say the key to victory now is getting out their vote. The Service Employees International Union help is a boost for Lamont, who does not have a tested ground operation, and marks another humiliation for Lieberman, who is used to strong union support.

"It's been a good day. This is actually in our grasp," said Lamont spokeswoman Liz Dupont-Diehl.

While SEIU Local 1199 in Hartford has not endorsed a candidate, the larger New York union said it has many members who commute from Connecticut.

1. I hope Ned gives Joe
a solid trouncing.

And I hope the DLC members give Ned their unqualified support post-primary.

9. Noooo

As much as I disagree with dolstein, it was nice to hear the line of thinking that leads to strong support for Lieberman. It helps to define me.

5. Wow......this is so amazing.
We are watching history in the making.

Joe Lieberman is the Achilles' Heel of the war. There is another thread, it's entitled, "Lamont victory means the beginning of the end of the Iraq War".

I was just stunned, speechless. Sat and read the title of that thread.

Now I understand why they have gone to such lengths to protect Lieberman. He was the weakest link in the chain, their most vulnerable warmonger.

And he's going.......OMG......
