Bush, Annan discuss U.N. resolution on Lebanon

CRAWFORD, Texas, Aug 4 (Reuters) - U.S. President George W. Bush spoke by phone on Friday with U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan amid feverish attempts to reach a U.N. resolution on the fighting in southern Lebanon.

White House spokesman Tony Snow said the two spoke for 15 minutes. He had no immediate details, but earlier Snow said both the United States and France seemed confident that an agreement on a U.N. resolution will be sealed soon.

"If not today it is a matter of a very few days," he said.

6. That must have been an uncomfortable conversation.
Bush: "Did you see the pig we ate in Germany?"
Annan: "Yes, but what about the ceasefire?"
Bush: "That was quite a pig."
Annan: "Yes, but what about the ceasefire?"
Bush: "Have you heard of The Goat Book?"
Annan: "Yes, but what about the ceasefire?"
Bush: "I got a guitar as a gift once."
Annan: "Yes, but what about the ceasefire?"
Bush: "I like birthday cake."
Annan: "Yes, but what about the ceasefire?"
etc.

Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will discuss the situation when she arrives in Crawford, Texas, where Bush is on vacation at his ranch, on Saturday and she is expected to work the phones on the U.N. resolution until a deal is reached.

13. "Moving closer to the position that France and other European countries
are taking"

http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/746632.html

snip>

Rice expressed support Thursday for an immediate cease-fire in Lebanon as the first phase in ending the conflict.

Moving closer to the position that France and other European countries are taking, Rice predicted that a UN Security Council resolution would be approved within days that would include a cease-fire and outline principles for a lasting peace.

On the CNN program "Larry King Live," Rice said that the U.S. is moving "toward being able to do this in phases that will permit first an end or a stoppage in the hostilities and based on the establishment of some very important principles for how we move forward," according to a transcript of the program.

end snip>

Oh my, is Bush caving in? What will his base think? Or is Rice speaking out of turn on her own again and soon to be rebuffed for being off script?

15. Vive La France!
>Moving closer to the position that France

Yep, we're trying to suck up to the French now, after pilloring them for being prudent. That's why the congressional cafeterias are back to serving "french fries" and "french toast."

But they are shrewd, insisting on a ceasefire BEFORE their troops engage for peacekeeping. Gee, when did common sense become shrewd?
