Poll: Americans' approval of Bush creeps upward, but lags approval of Rice

(CNN) -- President Bush's job approval rating continues a slow climb, according to poll results released Friday, but the majority of Americans still disapprove, even as they approve of Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's performance.

Fifty-nine percent of 1,047 Americans participating in the telephone poll, conducted by Opinion Research Corporation for CNN, said they disapprove of how Bush is handling his job as president. Forty percent said they approved.

...

But 62 percent of poll respondents said they disapproved of Bush's handling of the situation in Iraq -- tying May poll results for the most respondents who disapprove. Another 59 percent said they disapproved of Bush's handling of the economy.

...

Asked about Rice, 62 percent said they approved of her job performance, and 59 percent said they were "confident" or "somewhat confident" about her ability to handle the Middle East situation. The Rice questions were asked of only half the respondents, or about 524 people.

19. Wasn't this a poll of 524?
Or was it over a 1,000? Either way,it isn't anything to get excited about. 500 or a 1,000 people CAN NOT speak for MILLIONS. CNN's polls always have sucked. I pay no attention to them.

23. I really think this poll reflects the influence of the Israeli/Lebanon
conflict. Bush's approval, because of the strong support of Israel by American Jews and evangelicals, has increased. Not because these people feel any better about what is going on in Iraq or domestically like the high oil prices, but just because Bush and his administration support anything and everything Israel does and his recent decision to not even criticize Israel for their massacres in Lebanon has made the hardline Israeli supports raise their approval of Bush.

33. after today's 250,000 iraqi protestors, check back on Bush poll
Sadar is seriosly mixing sh*t up again in Iraq, 250,000 gather today to support hezbollah against Israel, don't think this number will shrink as days pass by.

Iraq getting worse with each passing couple days.

members only? Focus on the Family members? Pnac signatories? This is pure BS.

8. Half the sample moves the sampling error rate from 3.0% to 4.3%
...I find it hard to accept that almost two thirds of Americans approve of Condi's job performance even before the Israeli/Lebanon war.

17. Noticed that, did you?
That was supposed to slip by!

I note that the story is also shy one more pertinent fact, which is: Who did they ask the Rice questions? Was everyone who registered a positive assessment of Bush then asked about Rice? Or was there proportional representation of respondents answering the Rice questions? And how could the polling agency know in advance how the Bush numbers would come out such that they could then ask the right proportions of respondents the questions about Rice?

Something about this poll's methodology smells a little . . . off.

10. Why did they pick Rice to ask about?
Why not Rumsfeld or Dick Cheney? That polster will get a nice bonus from the White House.

"The Rice questions were asked of only half the respondents, or about 524 people" (from story)

Why only half the respondants???

16. They must have asked the Republican half
or else they first asked, "Do you get all your information about foreign affairs from Fox?"

Rice is as big a failure as her boss. They both thought they should give Israel the wink and nod to get the job done, after all, it worked so well in Iraq. Apparently half of the respondents did not notice that the rest of the world wanted an immediate ceasefire and Dr. Rice went to Rome to torpedo it.

The fact that they did not say "a randomly chosen" half of the sample makes me assume their is some trickery here.

11. In other words, 40% of the country approves of $3/gal. gas.
"I would work with our friends in OPEC to convince them to open up the spigot, to increase the supply. Use the capital that my administration will earn, with the Kuwaitis or the Saudis, and convince them to open up the spigot."

-Bush-boy, 2000, describing how he will lower gas prices if elected.

The backwash supporters of the illegitimate fraud should pay a premium at the pump, while the sane majority should receive discounts.

26. If Bush doesn't soil himself on national TV, his polls go up
I know, it's very depressing, but we live in a country now that doesn't seem to care if our so-called "President" can't find his rear end with both hands, a flashlight, and a color-coded anatomy chart.

Bush has done NOTHING over the last couple of weeks, even though at the same time it seems like the Earth has been careening toward its final destruction. It's just a sad fact that if our joke of a media doesn't report on something in this country, it's just not news...and for the last couple of weeks, the media hasn't reported on anything that this idiot has or hasn't done, and so that's translated into GREAT WORK by the gullible masses.

It's a hard truth to accept, I know. But that's the way it is.
