14. Overview of humanitarian situation, and relief/aid group info
http://www.alertnet.org/thefacts/reliefresources/115348060912.htm
Here's an overview of the humanitarian situation as of Aug. 4:

* Some 900 people have been killed and 3,000 wounded in Lebanon so far, with a third of the casualties children under 12, according to a statement by the country's prime minister, Fouad Siniora. Reuters gives a more conservative estimate, reporting that at least 720 people have been killed as of Aug. 4. Around a million people (25 percent of the country's population) have been displaced by the conflict, according to the Lebanese government.

* Key roads and bridges were bombed north of Beirut on Aug. 4, cutting a vital supply and evacuation route to Syria. The bombing of the highway between Beirut and Syria could "sever the vital humanitarian lifeline" into the country, the U.N. World Food Programme (WFP) warned. The U.N. refugee agency UNHCR is among the agencies that has a supply base in Syria and has been dependent on the destroyed highway for its relief transports. The International Organisation for Migration (IOM), which is helping stranded migrants leave the country, is now looking for alternative roads with the help of Lebanese authorities....(more@link as to what different relief organizations are trying to do)

What is the world afraid of? This is really not making any sense anymore?

This destruction and killing is being done in full view of the world with instant reporting at the scenes of these war crimes. It is not hidden and no country can say they didn't know it was happening. So why are all nations ignoring this?

The bodies of Syrian kurd farm workers lie on the ground after an Israeli air raid on a farm in northeastern Lebanon, August 4, 2006. The raid on Qaa in the Bekaa Valley killed 33 and wounded 20. Israel struck four bridges linking Beirut to the north of the country earlier during the day.

33. This is insane. These right wing fascist treasonous rat bastards
are destroying the world, destroying hope, destroying decency. Even if one set aside the moral issues, even if one granted Israel a military victory here, what does it accomplish? Is Olmert Israel's George Bush? What end justifies this means? Even if they win the battle, they are losing the war. Heck, the Mercan people might even begin to wonder why we pay for this with our money, blood, standing in the world and our voice.

I'm furious. I don't want my taxes being used to bomb Lebanon. Then, I suppose after they make rubble of another country those patriotic defense contractors will make billions more "rebuilding." We could hope they'd do a better job than those crooks did in NOLA or Baghdad.

Our country has been hijacked, and if you want a laugh, call up YOUR REPRESENTATIVE and ask them why they're more concerned about the Likud than the US. Then turn on the tee vee and watch through your jail cell window as your freedom disappears.

43. Too late, let the IDF finish off Hezbollah
then let the peace return and the rebuilding begin

The majority of Lebanon has been untouched and most likely will not be completely destroyed. If it comes to that, it would be internal civil war , not Israel that destroys Lebanon.

The world body blew it big time by not enforcing the disarmament of Hezbollah and providing assitance to the Lebanese government to police their own territory and borders.

Unfortunately for both Israel and Labanon, this time, it's going to going to hurt a lot more. There is no way Hezbollah will ever voluntarily disarm. Never. Israel's only option is to inflict as much damage to Hezbollah as possible, and then negotiate a cease fire that allows a world military force to police the borders and not allow Hezbollah to rearm. It's going to require

Stopping now may save some lives, but it's only going to kick the can down the road again, and ensure there is another outbreak of war.

45. "stop provoking Hezbollah?"
Edited on Fri Aug-04-06 05:25 PM by Snivi Yllom
There is not even supposed to be a Hezbollah according to the UN, but that's another example of the failure to solve the issue in a definitive manner. Noone stepped in to properly help Lebanon to disarm hezbollah and kept the Syrians and Iranians from using Lebanon as a base of operations to attack Israel. Israel has fulfilled it's obligations to the UN and the world to pull out of Lebanon, but Hezbollah (really Iran and Syria) still attacks and harasses Israel. Well, Israel has had enough.

You want to blame anyone for not keeping the peace? Blame the UN, blame Syria, blame Iran, and blame the world.
