KABUL, Aug 4 (KUNA) -- Three soldiers of the International Security Assistance Force have been killed and six others wounded in a Taliban attack in southern Afghanistan, said a military press release issued late last night.
The attack was carried out in the same area of Kandahar province where a convoy of Canadian soldiers hit a landmine that injured three of them. The release said ISAF troops were working with Afghan forces to improve security along Highway 1 by disrupting Taliban activities and diminishing their influence on local civilians when the insurgents attacked from the area of a school. The three most seriously wounded soldiers were evacuated by helicopter to an ISAF medical facility in neighbouring Helmand province. Three others were evacuated by helicopter to the multi-national hospital at Kandahar airfield. All six soldiers are in good condition with non-life threatening injuries, said the release. "Our thoughts are with the families and friends of the fallen soldiers at this difficult time," said Brigadier General David Fraser, commander of ISAF Regional Command South. The same day, a suicide bomber killed 21 civilians when he blown up his explosive-packed car in a market in Panjwayee district of the same province. This was the deadliest attack since the one in March this year which killed 25 civilians. Earlier, the same day, on ISAF soldier was killed and another wounded in an explosion caused by an Improvised Explosive Device in the same region. (end) gk.
