Israel blocks supply of fuel to Lebanon
BEIRUT: Israel, which has been blockading Lebanon’s ports for three weeks, yesterday refused to allow the shipment of much-needed fuel for its power plants, Lebanese government officials said.

"Once again, Israel which has been carrying out a maritime blockade, refused Thursday the arrival of ships currently stationed in Cyprus," said an official from the Lebanese government High Relief Commission.

"(Israel) has told the UN, who acts as a communication channel, that paperwork was still missing."

Earlier in the day, the president of fuel importers said that the UN had received Israel’s agreement in principle for delivery of the shipments.

2. Guess they do not want an TV coming in for people to see.
This seems to be another stupid move that is being made daily on some one some place. It is getting hard to keep up with what these men in power and with so called education are doing in any of these countries.

5. Lebanon: Israel Wages War of Starvation
Friday August 4, 2006 1:01 PM

BEIRUT, Lebanon (AP) - Israel is waging a ``war of starvation'' on Lebanon's civilians in an effort to force the government to agree to Israel's demands, Lebanese President Emile Lahoud said in a statement issued Friday.

His comments came after Israeli warplanes bombed bridges and roads in Christian neighborhoods north of Beirut, killing five civilians and making travel between suburbs increasingly difficult. Missiles struck the country's main north-south highway - its primary artery to the outside world, through Syria in the north.

``The Israeli enemy's bombing of bridges and roads is aimed at tightening the blockade on the Lebanese, cutting communications between them and starving them,'' Lahoud said. (...)

``Today's air raids confirm that Israel is trying to compensate for the losses of its army in the south ... by cutting off the only coastal highway remaining to transport aid to displaced people and refugees and supply the country with oil products, foodstuffs and aid,'' Lahoud said.

6. Since when is it legal for any state
to mount its own sanctions against another country?

I thought all sanctions had to be voted on and authorised by the UN.

7. You forgot the exclusion clause ...
> I thought all sanctions had to be voted on and authorised by the UN ...

... unless it involves the US and/or Israel.

(Why waste time on a vote that they'd never bother to respect?)

8. Hardly.
And "sanctions" isn't the right word here; "blockade", that's a different story.

Sanctions were widely imposed by Muslim or Arab countries from Israel's establishment until the Camp David accords; even then, only a couple of countries don't have them, and for those the "regularization" of trade has had little impact. You may say it's regularized, but that requires action by bureaucrats and businessmen.

To this day, importing things from Israel, or even with Hebrew writing on it, will get the things confiscated and you arrested in many Arab countries.

Those sanctions, like those against Cuba, or South Africa, or other countries needs no UN approval; they're purely a matter of sovereignty. The UNSC may impose sanctions, but if a country ignores them it doesn't suffer.

BTW, apparently Egypt blockaded Israel before the '67 war. It's an act of war, and common during wartime.
