Report: Israel asked UK help on ceasefire last week

The As-Sennara newspaper, which is published in Nazareth, reported that Israel turned to British Ambassador Simon McDonald last weekend asking that he urge Prime Minister Tony Blair to act along with the US to promote a ceasefire with Hizbullah.

The report said Israel was hoping for a ceasefire due to disagreement between the security establishment and the political echelon, but President George W. Bush refused.

10. Ambigous, maybe
I don't condone what Israel is doing in Lebanon.

And I think it was a mistake, and Israel knows this now.

I think Israel wanted somebody to pull their chestnuts out of the fire, and Washington, for its own reasons, decided that it was better to keep them there.

All they need is an excuse to pull out.

12. Well, I may be wrong
God knows I've been wrong before...

But the Bush Cabal has it's own agenda, and Iran is part of it. That's why we have troops stationed on both sides of Iran, that's why Washington keeps pointing the finger in that direction at every opportunity.

I think Israel screwed up, and the neocons in Washington are exploiting the opportunity.

My personal opinion is that Israel bluffed on a weak hand and the neocons doubled up the bet.

I do not hold Israel blameless for what happened, but I also don't think that the neocons are beyond screwing Israel if it suits their purposes.

7. Huh? Who/what do they mean by "Israel"? For that matter what do
they mean by "security establishment" and "political echelon"? The military and some part of the government are having a disagreement?

14. More blaming. If Israel wants a ceasefire, they have to stop firing.

15. Bullshit. Blair has been out front repeating the "sustainable
ceasefire," which acutally means no ceasefire, to parrot Bush & Condi.
