The Ford Motor Company said today that it had significantly widened a recall already involving millions of vehicles that have cruise control systems prone to catching fire.
The company has now added another 1.2 million sport utility vehicles, pickup trucks and vans to the list of automobiles that have already been recalled. That raises the total number of vehicles now identified as having potentially faulty cruise control switches at 6.7 million, making this recall possibly the third largest in United States history.
But with this latest round of vehicles added, Ford and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration hope no more recalls will be necessary. The investigation into why the cruise control systems were leaking hydraulic fluid and causing fires was one of the most extensive the agency has ever conducted.
“They’re confident, and we’re confident, that this will address all the vehicles that potentially have a problem,” said Rae Tyson, a spokesman for the safety administration.
