Jordanian king 'enraged by war'
King Abdullah of Jordan has publicly criticised the United States and Israel over the fighting in Lebanon.

He told Jordanian newspapers he was enraged by the war, and that continued fighting only weakened the voice of Middle East moderates such as himself.

He argued Israel's attempt to destroy the militant Hezbollah group would not solve problems in the region.

He stressed the only way to achieve peace was to end the Israeli occupation of Arab lands.

7. Bingo!!
Abdullah isn't worried about anything so much as saving his own monarchy and collecting his paychecks from Uncle Sam.

2. Well, isn't this a bit late and a little too whimpish? King Hussein has
to be rolling over in his grave at the way his son has caved to the US.

3. Sounds reasonable to me
It's a catch-22 situation for Israel...

On one hand there's a terrorist group lobbing rockets into their territory injuring and killing their civilians. On the other hand by ruthlessly attacking this group everywhere in Lebanon, destroying entire residential sections of Beirut, destroying bomb shelters filled with women and children, theyr'e just creating more problems for the future, creating more radical supporters, and making arab moderate voices harder to be heard.

So they need to look at the long term, and realize that what they're doing now, even if they utterly destroy hezbollah, isn't going to solve the problem at all, and a new group will just rise up to take it's place.

8. You are confusing Hamas and Hezbollah.
I understand that the issues are complex and there are many players, but when you wrote "a terrorist group lobbing rockets into their territory " you could not be correctly referring to Hezbollah, which was not shooting rockets into Israel until after Israel started to bomb the crap out of Lebanon. Hezbollah's rocket attacks cannot be used as the justification for Israel starting this war as they followed not preceded the initiation of hostilities.

The incident that started the war was a border raid that resulted in two captured IDF soldiers, not a terrorist attack.

The IDF can "utterly destroy hezbollah" only by committing genocide.

9. No I'm not
If we want to look for causation, someone else showed a nice causative track that blamed Hitler for creating Hezbollah. Yes there were other kidnappings, and trades, and shellings of beaches, and bus bombs, and roadside shootings, and on and on and on.

I'm saying that as far as Israel is concerned they can't just sit back now and let rockets stream in on their country without any kind of action.

I'm saying that their choice of action, to bomb the hell out of Lebanon, might win them the short term goal of stopping the rockets, but will in the long term hurt hem more than help them.

Hence it's a catch-22. They can't bomb Lebanon, but they have to do something to protect their civilians.

10. The mass of rockets came after Beirut was bombed, and has increased
or decreased in the same proportion as Beirut's being bombed.

11. I am not going any further back than the start of this war.
The war started over a military altercation between Hezbollah and the IDF. Israel need only have not started in with the widespread bombing campaign and there would have been no Hezbollah rockets streaming in on their country. Once again you are simply ignoring the timeline of events claiming it seems that what actually happened doesn't matter. What actually happened does matter when you claim that the justification for the actions of the IDF are events that followed what the IDF did. It is not a catch-22 it is circular reasoning on your part.

12. You're misunderstanding me
It's not circular reasoning.

I'm saying that Israel needs to assess what it's goals are. If it's goals are long term safety then they shouldn't continue their bombing campaign, and never have started it, as even if they eliminated Hezbollah another group would take their place and more people would hate them and attack them in the future.

4. Military campaign "undermining the voice of moderation in the Arab world"
The Jordanian monarch blamed Israel's harsh military campaign in Lebanon for undermining the voice of moderation in the Arab world, saying the Arab people now saw Hezbollah as the hero because it was fighting Israel's aggression.
