Senator Seeks to Fix Damage Over Remarks
Senator Seeks to Fix Damage Over Remarks
By MATT GOURAS , 08.03.2006, 02:40 AM

~snip~
Burns, one of the most vulnerable incumbents in the fall elections, confronted members of a firefighting team at the Billings airport on July 23 and told them they had done a "piss-poor job," according to an official state report and the U.S. Forest Service.
(snip)

In 1999, Burns issued a written apology after referring to Arabs as "rag heads" during a speech while commenting on oil prices. In 1994, Burns repeated a story that included the word "niggers" and commented that living with blacks in Washington, D.C., was "a hell of a challenge." He also onced asked a woman who was wearing a nose ring what tribe she belonged to.

Last year, the senator denied a flight attendant's claim that he told her she could "go home and be a mother" if her airline job were eliminated.
(snip)

Burns apologized the day the confrontation made headlines. During a conference call with reporters, he said there was no anger in his comments and characterized the encounter as a nonevent. He also said he approached the firefighters, who told him they did not want a visit and he left them.
(snip)

A videotape obtained and circulated by the Democratic Party shows that when the conference call ended, Burns turned to officials in the room and said, "that's the way to shut that down ... that works."
(snip/...)

3. cause before Dean, the DNC considered Montana
a repub state, and therefore didn't help out the democratic challenger. That is why a 50 state strategy is sooo important.

4. That *is* a sad thing.
One might expect this sort of psychopathy to be produced by a gerrymandered heavily Republican district, but for an entire state to have repeatedly sent this type of guy to Washington as a Senator is *very* disconcerting.

Conrad Ray Burns (born January 25, 1935) is the junior United States Senator from Montana. He is only the second Republican to represent Montana in the Senate since the 1913 passage of the Seventeenth Amendment and is the longest-serving Republican senator in Montana history.

    from wikipedia

So let's pray/hope that Montana gets back on the progress track, as with their governorship last time 'round, and sends Jon Tester to DC this Fall.

10. My eldest brother's told me about 'Collapse' ...
Edited on Thu Aug-03-06 03:49 AM by krkaufman
... but another brother currently has possession. I'm looking forward to reading that one someday.

(And thanks for the info. Maybe I'll just have to order my own copy -- or, heck, see if the library has a copy. duh!)

edit: p.s. I'm from Illinois, and am living in Illinois. But I did cross into Montana once, in the early 90s, during a Christmas vacation, and skied for a day at Big Sky.

9. Logging, ranching, mining
And people who blame environmentalists for the bad economy. That's not all, but that's a lot of it.

8. Time to see Burns go down in Flames,
and he won't have any Firefighters to help put him out.

Burns burned that Bridge behind him, when he accused the Firefighters of "piss poor job."
If the Firefighters feel sympathy for him perhaps they could piss on him to put him out.

Play with Fire you get Burned.

11. He's got some more appologizing to do to the Virginia fire fighters
who he insulted as they were waiting to leave his beautiful state after working very hard to save the place. He rolled in and gave them crap because they wouldn't let homeowners fight the fire right next to them. Duh, Conrad, you idiot. They're not there to get hurt or worse by violating procedure.

But Conrad is such a POS, he just wheeled in to the airport to give them crap.

What an idiot.
