ROCKVILLE, Md. -- A former White House adviser will plead guilty to misdemeanor theft,
and both the prosecution and defense will ask that he serve no time in jail, according
to a published report.
Claude Allen, 45, was one of President Bush's top domestic policy advisers in a
$161,000-a-year job until he resigned in February, a month after he was arrested
at a Target store near his home in Gaithersburg.
He was scheduled to go on trial in June for allegedly trying to make fraudulent returns
worth at least $5,000 at Target and other stores. But Montgomery County prosecutors
and Allen's attorneys agreed to postpone the trial and try to negotiate a deal.
Allen will admit to fraudulently stealing items worth less than $500, according to court
documents filed Wednesday, The News & Observer of Raleigh, N.C. reported Wednesday
on its Web site. Lawyers will ask that he pay $850 in restitution to Target Corp. and serve
one month's probation.
