Ukraine Political Crisis Still in Limbo

A midnight Wednesday deadline passed with no word from President Viktor Yushchenko on whether he would accept his chief rival's nomination as prime minister, or if he had another plan for ending Ukraine's political crisis.

The deadline's expiration pushes Ukraine into another round of the political uncertainty that has dragged on since parliamentary elections more than four months ago.

The March election left no party with a majority of seats in the legislature. The party that got the most seats, led by Viktor Yanukovych, eventually formed a coalition with two other parties, one of which had defected from an earlier coalition of Yushchenko's supporters.

The new majority coalition last month nominated Yanukovych to be prime minister. But Yushchenko would have to forward the nomination to parliament for the premier to be named.
