Mel Gibson charged with DUI
Wednesday, August 2, 2006

MALIBU, California (CNN) -- Actor-director Mel Gibson was charged Wednesday with driving last week under the influence of alcohol, a misdemeanor, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office said.

Gibson, 50, was charged with one count each of driving under the influence and driving while having a 0.08 percent or higher blood alcohol content, said Deputy District Attorney Ralph Shapiro, the deputy in charge of the Malibu office.

In addition, Gibson was charged with driving with an open container of alcohol, a vehicle code infraction.

Gibson was stopped about 2:09 a.m. Friday on Pacific Coast Highway after a Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputy allegedly observed him driving his 2006 Lexus at more than 85 mph....

***

His arraignment was set for September 28 in Malibu Superior Court. If convicted, Gibson faces up to six months in jail....

1. Why all of the attention on this NON story?
So the guy got drunk, so he drove drunk, so he repeated ethnic slurs..... SO WHAT!!!! He was caught, arrested, and outed. People can hate him for the slurs all that they want to, hopefully his charges lead to a just punishment, maybe he will get some help with his drinking. I don't understand why this is being so blown out of proportion. It is NOTHING in comparision to other things going on right now as we speak.

3. Bingo!
But the MSM media and the WH love it so that it can take all the attention away from the big stories, and by the way what ever happened to the fact that Cheney is being sued by Valerie Plame.??It's like it never happened! I realize the ME is more important, but Plame is more important than Smell Gibson, right?

15. Its the reason so many americans are so out of touch with current events
In every single grocery store isle in America, you will see 100% news about celebrities on the front covers of magazines. Unless there is something crazy going on like 9-11, there will never be any real news in the public eye.

4. well
to us it isn't big news. I am Jewish and it was no surprise he was an anti-semite, I don't care, I don't support his crap anyhow. It isn't a big story to me. However, to many many people in this country this is the only type of story they care about. Especially all the fundies in love with him.

9. Because he's a Billionaire
And his money goes to drive a huge media delivery franchise Icon that is highly politicized, and stands against many concerns that people at DU hold very dear. And, well, there's a tad too much attention paid to him in my opinion, but I don't think its a non-issue by any stretch. His most recent movies were a rallying point for the religious right and I'm definitely interested in how his public persona affects the rallying cry.

6. Why wasn't he charged with the speeding?
In my state (NC), any speed 15 mph or great over the speed limit is automatically reckless driving.

10. The police department was pretty good about this
IMHO... The report mentions him going back to his car when asked to get in the police cruiser, but distinctly says that he did not put up a fight when handcuffed... He complied, and I think they made the right decision here assuming the report is to be believed. I don't see a reason to doubt the veracity of the report. If I'm understanding this one gets charged with resisting arrest when one puts up a fight and they have to use force. The police officer says no force was needed to cuff him. Anyone more familiar with police work see it differently?

20. I agree with your assessment
but when they specically state he was stopped for 87 in a 45, it begs the question about a speeding charge.

21. Yeah, that was my question too. I was once stopped on a freeway for going
70 in a 65 zone, no traffic and it was downhill so I'd picked up speed and by the time I had adjusted for it, the CHP was behind me with lights. Stone cold sober, a nobody, and I got a ticket. Celebrity's shitfaced, going almost twice the legal speed limit and no citation for speeding? Even gets a ride to the tow lot to pick up his car. Nice. (Not to mention the other times he was pulled over for speeding in the area and let go without a ticket.)

23. Yeah... that does seem odd about the speeding
I didn't know he got a ride to the impound lot. That's pretty swanky. Where to I sign up for the elite club at the Police Department? Maybe the street sweeper can clean my car too instead of giving me a ticket on cleaning day.

17. North from moonshadows
I presume he was travelling north, as moonshadows is just past bigrock, the speed limit
between tuna canyon and bigrock is 45 if i recall, and this continues past moonshadows,
but then goes up to 55 past los flores towards town and the colony where i think in
parts it is slower than 55.

I once got a speeding ticket going 85 near moonshadows, and the cops were extremely rude.
"You're the kind of guy i like to see wrapped around telephone poles." (exact qoute) I'm sure that malibu
police stay nicer things to big stars like mel gibson.

It saddens me, honestly, about gibson, as moonshadows is hardly the pinnacle of success.
My childhood home was up the hill from that place, an i could hear the PCH traffic at
night, and see the moon shadows on the ocean as the clouds passed by a full moon. Gosh,
they turned it in to moonshadows musta been early 80's, after malibu became a bigshot
rich man's place after populizing in so many TV shows. And australian super rich who
could live anywhere on the planet are lost in mediocrity and ignorance.

13. Doesn't look too bad in the mugshot...
...not like Nick Nolte, or anything. What's really a hoot are the pictures that were taken of him and some women at a Malibu restaurant earlier in the evening. He looks pretty damned toasted in most of them, and the media's been playing up those pics more than the mugshot.

16. I still don't understand why these gazillionares can get drunk and drive..
Edited on Wed Aug-02-06 06:05 PM by KansDem
I mean, they can obviously afford the very best liquor, so go ahead and imbibe. BUT, when you get shit-faced, CALL A CAB!!! You got the geld, so let someone else do the driving. It's not like they've spent their last two bucks on a happy-hour pitcher of BudLite and have nothing left for a $20 cab fare...*

*less tip

22. Pat Robertson says 'pray for Mel'
http://www.kristv.com/Global/story.asp?S=5232640&nav=Bsmh

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

While on the subject of Patwa, he's had a change of heart regarding global warming. Heat wave giving him premonitions of eternity?

http://www.wlns.com/Global/story.asp?S=5233194&nav=0RbQ

I know, I know, who gives a rats ass about Pat Robertson anyway?
I sort of have the same feeling about Mel posts lately. :P

26. AAAAAAAH!!!
(snip)

Robertson said Gibson "is somebody who has given his heart to the Lord," and who "struck a great blow for Christianity around the world" with his film "The Passion of the Christ."

(snip)

Pat Robertson is such a loser... POTC is SOOO Violent! How can he applaud that movie and still keep a straight face when he complains so much about the rest of hollywood's violent content. WHAT AN EVIL HYPOCRITE!
