More Proof WTC First Responders Exposed to Deadly Chemicals

The health news for the emergency workers—firefighters, paramedics and police officers—who worked in the rubble of the World Trade Center after the Sept. 11 terrorists attacks continues to grow grimmer.

A new study shows the nearly 12,000 firefighters and emergency medical workers who took part in the ground zero rescue and recovery operations experienced such severe trauma to their lungs that their lungs aged the equivalent of 12 years in the year following the attack—putting them at risk for chronic lung problems later in life.

Tests on the emergency workers show that in the year after the attacks their lung capacity declined to a point that doctors say would normally take 12 years of aging to reach.

The study, published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, identified some 400 chemicals mixed together in the toxic dust and dirt stew at ground zero.

But immediately after the attacks, then-Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) administrator Christine Todd Whitman assured the public the site was safe. It was revealed last week the Bush administration gave Whitman the right to bury embarrassing EPA documents about the chemicals and other hazards by classifying them as secret.

The study says 50 percent of the ground zero emergency workers report cases of what’s called “World Trade Center cough”; 42 percent experience shortness of breath when exercising; 24 percent have wheezing problems; and 21 percent experience chest pain or tightness.

The study’s authors say they are conducting examinations to determine if the workers’ lung functions continue to deteriorate and if the reported pulmonary health problems have worsened.

A little more than a year ago, President Bush vetoed a bill that included $90 million to monitor the health of rescue and cleanup workers who were at ground zero. In June, hundreds of union members and their allies rallied at ground zero to demand funding for the long-term health needs of workers who are suffering from serious ailments linked to their ground zero work following Sept. 11.

Meanwhile, the New York Daily News recently published a series detailing the health suffering of the World Trade Center emergency workers.

The magnitude of the epidemic has worsened for five years as every level of government has failed to face the reality of what happens when large numbers of people without proper respiratory protection are exposed for long periods to air thick with toxic substances.

Responsibility runs from the federal government, where then-Environmental Protection Administrator Christie Whitman falsely assured 9/11 responders that the air was safe, to the New York State Health Department, which abandoned a program designed to monitor the health of 9,800 state and National Guard personnel, to the New York City Health Department, which has yet to issue treatment guidelines for physicians.

This on my fellow AFSCME members that have died from being first responders!

NEW YORK CITY

Cancer directly linked to asbestos has claimed the life of Deborah Reeve, a Local 2507 (DC 37) paramedic in New York City who was a first-responder at Ground Zero. Two 9/11 — and Local 2507 — colleagues perished some four years after beginning work at Ground Zero: EMT Tim Keller, 41, from complications of respiratory distress; and EMT Felix Hernandez, 31, from lung disease.

Family members say Reeve, who was 40, developed a persistent cough after working at the disaster site, and two years later was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a fatal cancer triggered by breathing airborne asbestos fibers.

Survivors of these AFSCME members have not received increased pension-fund payments from New York state for work-related injury resulting in death. "It's difficult to prove that the diseases are work related," explains Lee Clarke, director of Safety and Health for DC 37, which represents more than 3,000 rescuers and responders in the city. "If you jab yourself with a needle and get hepatitis C, you can prove injury. But 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina demonstrate that pension-compensation laws have not been written in ways that protect first-responders for illnesses resulting from disaster-related work."

1. What was Bush's first veto?
>>A little more than a year ago, President Bush vetoed a bill that included $90 million to monitor the health of rescue and cleanup workers who were at ground zero.<<

I thought his first veto was the recent stem cell legislation? If so, this statement is incorrect.

7. Bush Veto Threatens Health Monitoring for WTC Site Workers

http://www.aflcio.org/issues/ns08142002.cfm

In an insult to the thousands of workers who helped in the recovery and clean-up after the Sept. 11 World Trade Center attacks, President George W. Bush said Aug. 13 he will not release the $5.1 billion Congress approved for supplemental homeland security programs, including $90 million to monitor the health of workers who cleaned up the rubble.

Saying, “actions speak louder than words,” Fire Fighters President Harold Schaitberger recalled Bush’s emotional speech about the heroes of Sept. 11. “Don’t lionize our fallen brothers in one breath and then stab us in the back by eliminating funding for our members to fight terrorism and stay safe,” Schaitberger said.

New York City union members and state AFL-CIO leaders sought the $90 million to establish a health screening program for the workers. The money would be used to establish a lifelong screening program to track the workers who loaded and hauled debris, restored utilities and performed other cleanup work that exposed them to several toxic substances.

“Many of these workers are sick and many more could become sick because of exposure to toxic substances,” said Peg Seminario, the AFL-CIO’s health and safety director. “Bush talks about how he cares about workers, but he fails to act to make sure they get necessary medical exams.”

Some medical experts have estimated at least half the workers cleaning up the Ground Zero site will require treatment for serious health problems after being exposed to asbestos, carcinogens and other health hazards.

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton had urged Bush to sign the legislation. “These heroes performed far beyond their responsibilities—we at the very least must meet ours,” she said. “Every one of these workers and volunteers is a hero. We have an obligation to provide these courageous men and women with the health screening tools that they require to protect them from serious disease and illness in the future.”

In addition to the health monitoring program, the AFL-CIO and affiliated unions support other appropriations Bush killed, including $400 million for election reform and $200 million for international HIV/AIDS prevention.

3. A huge clue that the site was dangerous was when the rescue dogs died.
Whitman is another * cabinet criminal. I remember when she lied and I knew she was lying. These are just more "numbers" to these criminals. They don't care about how many die as long as it isn't them.

4. not a surprise at all
When you breath high quantities of construction debris such as pulverized glass, sand, concrete, lead, asbestos, fumes, etc, into your lungs it's not good for you.

A lot of the construction workers and responders knew what would happen to them, but many did not think about it. I had a conversation about this shortly afer 9/11 with someone who owns a construction company. He said, thsoe people will be dead in 10 years.

God forbid an attack happens like that again. Next time rescuers will be hard pressed to want to charge into action without regards for their own safety. I can also imagine the cost of a cleanup increasing 10 fold as something like superfund site like rules kick in.

6. This will be a hugh gap...
to fill.

If widespread enough, then within the next ten or so years starting now, NYC and all those departments effected (law enforcement, medical, fire and rescue, engineer corps., etc) will have huge staff shortages as many will be 1) dead, 2) disabled or higher than normal early retirement leave.

They will be hard-pressed to fill the shortages with fully trained people within such a narrow window of time. The likely source of trained personnel is usually the military -- but it is being used elsewhere :eyes:

Quite shocking that the GOP loves to use the tragedy of 9/11 for it's own gains, but are outrageously criminal in their miserly attitude towards the city and environs in terms of homeland security funding and health and safety funding for these dedicated servants that served all of America as well as New Yorkers. Even sadder when the people of New Orleans and environs had to go through this same calleousness.

13. Families of first responders will be sickened also
Every time boots and clothing were worn back to the family home, every time uniforms were washed and dried with the family laundry, asbestos and other deadly contaminants were spread to wives and children.

As the days wore on after 9-11 I was appalled beyond words at the lack of respiratory gear and haz-mat suits among the workers. I remember reading that a lot of them were day-laborers -- which means no one will ever know of their suffering.

Bush, Whitman, and the rest piously claim to believe in Hell, don't they? A choking, sulfurous, sort of place, where every breath is a torment. And they claim to believe in a God that would condemn them for their actions.... How, then, do they sleep at night?

14. It's even worse than that...
Edited on Thu Aug-03-06 04:28 AM by Guy Noir
The EPA gave the Green Light for a false immediate response to 911 for more than one reason.

The OK for immediate cleanup was given so that Wall Street could be re-opened ASAP (...number 1 priority. Also -- by saying "the air is safe" the EPA was off the hook for any & all responsibility.

There's much more here than meets the eye.

15. I know.Jimmy Breslin wrote a column about ordinary NYers who cough
About how so many people who live in the city haven't "taken a good breath" since 9-11, including himself. They keep trying to tell themselves it's just stress, but they know better. What he had to say about Whitman was very damning.

The Air Is Thick With Lies
by Jimmy Breslin
Published on Sunday, August 24, 2003
by the Long Island, NY Newsday

I was a few hundred yards up on Liberty Street when the Two Tower of the World Trade Center blew. I put my nose inside my shirt and ran through smoke that turned day into night. In the smoke were computers, asbestos, pulverized glass, human bodies, lead. I got on another street and One Tower blew up. Again, the air was black with a pulverized 110-story building.

I did not feel well for two months. I never said anything because I was too embarrassed. A couple of thousand had died. So many others were scorched and broken and maimed. I had no right to open my mouth, I thought. Besides, from the first day, the government's Environmental Protection Agency had announced that air was remarkably clean. Work on. Breathe on. You're fine. They lied. They lied because the administration did not want people not going to work. They lied the first week and they lied the week after that and they have lied every day of the past two years to the people of this city.

Christine Whitman was the EPA head until recently. I wasn't disturbed that her education was a jump horse school, but I thought she was better than standing up and doing what she was told by George Bush's White House, telling lies to a public who had to breathe this air. Turns out she isn't much of a human being.

The EPA has just admitted that they lied for all this time. Now what are we supposed to do? By now I feel better physically because I have adjusted to feeling lousy. <snip>

16. List of illnesses from PBA ; and a nun who blessed WTC site now sick
Has people's symptoms, diagnosis, and how long they were at the WTC site/landfill

http://nycpba.org/wtc/registry.html

And an article about a new state law signed by Pataki:

http://www.nypost.com/news/regionalnews/gov_to_sign_bill_for_tragic_wtc_heroes_regionalnews_kenneth_lovett_in_albany_and_stephanie_gaskell_in_n_y_.htm

Gov. Pataki is expected to sign a bill today that would allow families of 9/11 first responders who died as a result of the terror attacks to collect accidental-death benefits. He'll also announce administrative changes to let afflicted workers get treatment while they wait for their claims to be processed.

The governor will also sign a bill that will extend the time that 9/11 first responders can file a worker's compensation claim. Instead of a two-year deadline kicking in from the day of the attack, the new law would allow sick first responders to file a claim within two years of showing symptoms.

Meanwhile, aides to Pataki said a nun who spent six months blessing human remains in the rubble at Ground Zero and is now dying of lung disease would be able to start receiving benefits immediately.

The Post reported yesterday that Sister Cindy Mahoney, 54, said she wants her body autopsied to prove that she was sickened by the poisonous air at the site.
