Statement from Rep. John Murtha (D-PA-12) re: Defamation Suit
"I don't blame the staff sergeant for lashing out. When I spoke up about Haditha, my intention was to draw attention to the horrendous pressure put on our troops in Iraq and to the cover-up of the incident.

"Our troops are caught in the middle of a tragic dilemma. The military trains them to fight a conventional war and use overwhelming force to protect U.S. lives. I agree with that policy, but when we use force, we often kill civilians. What are the consequences?

"Three years ago, there were fewer than 500 foreign fighters in Iraq. They were called 'dead enders.' Then there were 5,000, and they were called 'terrorists.' Now there are 20,000, and the administration calls this 'sectarian violence.'

"All this time, we've had at least 130,000 U.S. troops on the ground in Iraq. In the last year, incidents have increased from 49 per day to 100 per day. About 14,000 Iraqis were killed in the last year, mostly in the last six months. Oil and electricity production are below pre-war level, and unemployment is 60 percent throughout most of the country. Our troops are in 120-degree temperatures with 70 pounds of equipment on their back, and they don't know who the enemy is.

"This conflict cannot be won militarily. Our troops are caught in the middle of a civil war. It's well beyond the time to redeploy from Iraq."

while showing respect to the young man.

Jack Murtha is pure old-school class and dignity.

29. Shouldn't everyones?
The Congressman is right. The soldiers are put in an utterly untenable position, and I can't even imagine the kind of pressure they are under over there. I'm certainly not defending them, but I'm not quite willing to completely demonize them yet either. I'll save the demonization for those who sent them there.

32. YES, they should
As the sister of a twenty-year career Marine, it hurts me to see something like this happen. We cannot - and should not - damn all for the actions of a few.

But this young man is misguided in his pursuit of a lawsuit against Representative Murtha. He's being used as a tool of the right-wing, and for that I DO fault him.

BTW, welcome to DU! :hi:

34. Absolutely
The lawsuit makes him a rat bastard. His service in the Marine Corps does not. IF he's a murderer, which all the evidence seems to indicate that he is, that makes him a rat bastard too. TY for the welcome. I'll just go back to lurking now.

2. So let him sue Big John. It doesn't matter a bit right now.
If the Marine is found guilty, he'll receive his due penalty.

If he's found innocent, he'll go free.

What the hell is he suing Murtha for at this point?

Edited on Wed Aug-02-06 01:41 PM by Penndems
Why not sue DoD, if he feels they gave Representative Murtha misleading information? Or the Bush Administration for sending him over there?

This case has all the earmarks of "swift boating".

39. Article 1, Section 6 protects John Murtha
Murtha made these remarks on the floor of the house and he is protected by the Constitution:

Section 6. The Senators and Representatives shall receive a compensation for their services, to be ascertained by law, and paid out of the treasury of the United States. They shall in all cases, except treason, felony and breach of the peace, be privileged from arrest during their attendance at the session of their respective Houses, and in going to and returning from the same; and for any speech or debate in either House, they shall not be questioned in any other place.

The suit is bullshit probably financed by the Nazi Republican Party.

18. Some allegedly retired military guy called Limbaugh today
and went into a rant about how he and his fellow military guys hated "Murtha types" and what they stood for.

So 37 years of honorable service by John Murtha evidently doesn't mean anything to this caller. Real nice talk from a military "brother", if in fact he was one. I have my doubts if he was really a military man.

John Murtha has more class in his pinky than that guy had in his entire body, and Rush Limbaugh is and always will be a dirty, rotten, stinking COWARD.

16. Yes, I agree - ain't gonna work a second time.
I think the "swift boater" had some traction cause we really didn't put a face on them - they were always in the shadows.

So, lets put a face on it. Mr O'Neils face - he is just raw meat into a crowd right now.

I think this suit is one of the dumbest moves I have ever seen in politics - so lets use it.

Can someone (more talented then me) get O'Neil's service records and put them on line here.

Lets take a real close look. Lets get the muster of just who served with him. Lets put a face on this and then put it under the same microscope they put Kerry under.

They have to be pulled out from the shadows now. It is a good time to do it, too.

Joe

28. It's too bad O'Neil can't be puhed to show his records -
I bet they won't come out as good under an intense spot light as Kerry's did. The sad thing is Kerry had them on his web site - and even when he signed the form for them to go directly to the papers - they verified they were the same.

They showed a great officer whose supordinates loved him.

37. Oh, we can get his records.
They are public - we need his service number.

Try this - My dad's number (he passed away) is A0831458.

He was Air Corp and then the Air Force - (so you call Boulder, CO)
Type his fighter group number in - 324 - absolutely amazing the stuff you get. I found the survivors of his fighter group that way, and I talk to some of them when I wrote the book.

Oh, we can find stuff on Mr O'Neil alright.

These so-called Veterans for Truth are pushing America further into the abyss. I can't remember who said it, but there's a quote which says that America will never be destroyed from the outside; it will be destroyed from within.

We are watching the destruction before our very eyes.
