BAGHDAD, Iraq - President Jalal Talabani says Iraqi forces will take over security of the country by the end of the year.

Thats all there is to the story folks, but thats all I needed to hear, I'm sure glad the troops will be home by Christmas though!

Great news, the occupation is finally over. :sarcasm:

1. Not by Christmas, by the November elections
Well, I'm sure that's the plan, but I doubt it will happen.

2. This will be the word until November 8th
at that time, it will be too difficult to pull the troops out and the operation will continue with no more mention of Iraq controlling their own country.

5. They are going to be pretending they will pull troops out right up until
Edited on Wed Aug-02-06 07:59 AM by w4rma
the day after elections.

And then, depending on how much power Repugs still have, they will try to keep them there as long as they can.

8. Another lie put out there for the ignorant masses
who don't know better. Never any mention of the permanent bases and gigantic US embassy going up. No, all election year bullshit to be trumpeted and then quietly shitcanned after the midterms. Right out of the Rove playbook.

9. "Operation Together Forward" was supposed to be a "crucial test"
it was a massive failure, and the U.S. has to now deploy tens of thousands of troops back to Baghdad.

So, they flunked their "crucial test" in Baghdad and they claim they're going to be ready for the entire country?

14. Sure. Talabani said it today, Al-Rubaie said it yesterday...
Talabani said it today, Al-Rubaie said it yesterday, but amazingly enough just one week ago today Iraqi PM Maliki got up and in a much-ballyhooed address to a joint session of Congress said...er, no such thing.

Maliki's exact words, in fact, were:

While political and economic efforts are essential, defeating terror in Iraq relies fundamentally on the building of sound Iraqi force, both in quantity and capability. The completion of Iraq's forces forms the necessary basis for the withdrawal of multinational forces, but it -- only then, only when Iraq's forces are fully capable will the job of the multinational forces be complete.

What a difference a week makes in the prognosis...and what the heck's that smell?

15. Talabani has zero power, and is merely a spokesman
The Iraqi Parliamentary Cabinet makes these decisions.
