US Senate passes Gulf of Mexico drilling bill

WASHINGTON, Aug 1 (Reuters) - The U.S. Senate on Tuesday voted to open 8.3 million acres in the Gulf of Mexico to oil and natural gas drilling, but contentious talks with the House of Representatives still loom.

The Senate bill, which passed 71-25, lifts a 25-year-old moratorium and allows drilling more than 125 miles off Florida's coast but bans drilling closer to shore until 2022.

It now must be reconciled with a more wide-sweeping bill passed by the House of Representatives in June that rescinds a drilling moratorium on most U.S. Atlantic and Pacific coastal waters more than 100 miles from shore.
