Chinese County Slaughters 50,000 Dogs
Dogs Taken From Owners, Beaten On Spot

SHANGHAI, China -- A county in southwestern China has killed as many as 50,000 dogs in a government campaign ordered after three people died from rabies, official media reported Tuesday.

The five-day massacre in Yunnan province's Mouding county spared only military guard dogs and police canine units, the Shanghai Daily reported, citing local media.

Dogs being walked were taken from their owners and beaten on the spot, the newspaper said. Other killing teams entered villages at night, creating noise to get dogs barking, then honing in and beating them to death.

Owners were offered 63 cents per animal to kill their dogs before the teams were sent in, the report said.

The massacre was widely discussed on the Internet, with both legal scholars and animal rights activists criticizing it as crude and cold-blooded. The World Health Organization said more emphasis needed to be placed on prevention.

4. Isn't that horrible?
For Christ's sake, couldn't they just go buy rabies shots, or take about 10 minutes to find out about the symptoms of rabies?????????

They've got the money....China is an emerging economy, for God's sake.

Now watch the rat population soar in China because of their stupidity. I'm sure THOSE dogs were not just the lap-dog kind we have here in the US....cute little useless Foofies.

I'm sure they worked for their keep.

7. Yunnan (China) culls 50,000 dogs to purge rabies
To my US friends....things can always be worse....we could live in China

Guardian

Police and public health officials in southern China have clubbed, hanged or electrocuted almost 50,000 dogs in a week-long crackdown on rabies, local media reported today.

Slaughter squads in Mouding, Yunnan province, grabbed pets from their owners while they were out for walks and beat them to death on the spot, the Shanghai Daily reported.

Dog owners were offered a 5 yuan (40 pence) reward for killing their own animals. Those who attempted to hide their pets indoors were flushed out by late-night squads that made loud noises outside to make the dogs bark.

The cull was ordered after three local people, including a four-year-old girl, died of rabies within six months. According to the state media, 360 of Mouding county's 200,000 residents had suffered dog bites this year. Pigs and cows have also been attacked.

8. What they needed to take care of was FERAL dogs
It's so sad that they've attacked confined pets.

The reservoir for rabies is likely wild animals in the region. Culling feral animals will reduce the transmission to domesticated dogs and cats.

They're generally too poor to vaccinate their pets. This is the best way to do it.

The world is a savage and brutal place sometimes.

Civilization is just a thin veneer that cracks easily...especially when the electricity fails.

10. Hmmm. s'omething doesn't sound right with this story.
First, I know for sure, the Chinese EAT damn near anything that was ever alive, and that includes dog, cat, monkey, etc.

Second, because of their er, eating culture, I thought there were very, very few dogs in China.

I guess, with the size of the country the story could be true, but it somehow doesn't fit with the things I know.

12. If it were Guandong province...
...I'd be suspicious. Dog is often on the menu.

That aside, I am not surprised at callous actions by the police in China. It is still a very controlled place where the power of the state is unquestioned. DUers would have a tough time living there as ordinary people. This is just one example.

There's a culture difference here. In US, dogs are pets; in China, dogs are delicious meat.

Chinese don't see dogs the way Americans see. So if they see the reaction here, they would say "what's wrong with these Americans?"

So we should never judge others without understanding their local culture first.

This is the same idea on "exporting democracy".

People around the world don't see or understand democracy the way we see it; so forcefully exporting it like Bush did to Iraqis does us no good.

26. According to the report, some of the animals were grabbed while
being walked by their owners, and the dogs were then beaten to death on the spot.

I'll go out on a limb and suppose that most of these pets' owners reacted the way most of us would, with shock and horror, and they did not shrug it off as a "cultural difference."

20. Hmm
I wonder what the opinions here would be if there were a mass outbreak of Rabies in China?
Something else to consider maybe there were OTHER diseases China is really worried about and Rabies was the most convenient to use.

The Chinese could try vaccinating their dogs LIKE WE DO. There is NO excuse for this behavior. It's not about 'democracy.' It's about common decency.

30. AP: Chinese Start Another Mass Dog Slaughter
Chinese Start Another Mass Dog Slaughter

By CHRISTOPHER BODEEN
The Associated Press
Friday, August 4, 2006; 5:13 AM

SHANGHAI, China -- A second Chinese city planned a mass dog slaughter
to contain a rabies outbreak, state media said Friday, days after similar
massacre in another province drew outrage.

Officials in the eastern city of Jining said Thursday they would kill
all dogs within three miles of areas where rabies was found, the official
Xinhua News Agency said.

The measure came in response to the deaths of 16 people from rabies
in Jining in the last eight months, Xinhua said. It didn't say how many
dogs would be killed, but said the city had about 500,000.

Rabies cases are on the rise in China, with more than 2,000 people dying
from the disease each year. Only 3 percent of the country's dogs are
vaccinated against rabies.
