New era on immigration (Colorado Immigration Law signed)
Gov. Bill Owens on Monday signed a package of controversial immigration bills he called the toughest in America - though he wanted tougher - launching a variety of government changes designed to trim Colorado's welfare and public-service rolls of illegal recipients.

"My goal is to stem the tide of illegal immigrants coming into Colorado," Owens said before signing into law 10 bills from a special session of the legislature he convened last month.

Barring another special session, they are the last new laws of Owens' eight-year administration, which ends Jan. 1.

"The legislature failed to enact common-sense solutions in several areas that require real and necessary reform," Owens said of his call for tougher immigration laws. He also said his biggest disappointment was that Initiative 55 isn't on the November ballot.

1. Federal Govt . inaction is causing states to deal with issues
themselves, minimum wage, immigration, global warming etc. Good for them.

2. Legal Status verification for Employment
The bill sounds like a good start, but prosecution of employers seemed to be extremely understated. Without employer prosecution for illegal hiring, none of this will work. Not surprising that a Republican governor is going slow on employer prosecution for illegal hiring. That would be the easiest aspect to enforce, but always the last one the Republicans want to perform.

3. In my area, landlords have begun to ask for evidence that -
- the applicant is here legally before renting to people. That has begun to make a difference, too.

4. Good
It needs to start somewhere. Every little bit helps. But I still think employer sanctions are going to be the big mover.

There are a lot fewer illegal employers in number than there are illegal immigrants. And they are much easier to catch and have much more to lose. Start heavily fining, or even jailing some employers for illegal hiring and there'll be a dramatic reduction in illegal immigration.
