Bombing on Israeli patrol road in Golan: military (Syria link?)
http://today.reuters.com/news/newsarticle.aspx?type=TopNews&storyID=2006-07-31T172951Z_01_L31148962_RTRUKOC_0_US-MIDEAST-LEBANON-SYRIA.xml
A Syrian-made bomb was detonated next to an Israeli army patrol road in the occupied Golan Heights, causing no casualties, an Israeli military source said on Monday.

A military source said the overnight explosion was triggered apparently by the detonation of an anti-tank mine east of the Israeli settlement of Ein Zivan on the Syrian side of the Golan armistice line.

Israel's Channel Two television quoted military sources as saying the blast in the Golan, which Israel captured from Syria in the 1967 Middle East war, was believed to be an act of solidarity with Lebanese Hizbollah guerrillas.

The blast has stirred concern the Lebanon conflict could widen, Channel Two said.

4. The Golan belongs to Syria
And the explosion was on the Syrian side, so what's the problem here?

Israel has no moral authority anymore. Israel must return the Shebaa Farms to Lebanon, and the Golan to Syria.

5. Umm. no.
and texas and california goes back to mexico.

Egypt was lucky to get their desert back.

Lesson don't lose a war(s) and expect to get your land back.

As for the story, hopefully not a prelude to syrian entry.

Saddam took what was not his. Israel has taken what was not hers. And we are expected to applaud such bad behaviour?

8. Problem is how Syria is getting pulled/entering into this war
How will Syria join, reluctantly or willingly? Through a made up incident or a real one? That is the problem. The next step in spreading the war onward to other countries directly. Then on and on and on.

The Shebba is nothing but a red herring in the current Israel/Lebanon conflict.

21. Ummm..no.
The Shebba Farms belong to Syria. If Syria wants to give it back, then they have to wait until they have it back...then they can do what ever the like with the land.

"A Syrian-made bomb was detonated next to an Israeli army patrol road in the "occupied Golan Heights"..."

If you were familiar with the Golan Heights history, you would know that parts of it is militarized zone. Then you would have to ask yourselves what was the Israeli Army doing militarized zone with Syria?

on edit: not all Golan Heights, but parts closer to the Syrian border are militarized zone.

11. An act of solidarity committed by whom?
En Ziwan is around 12 miles from the Lebanese (de facto, regardless of how you consider the Shebaa Farms area); it's close to Qunaytirah, which straddles the Israeli-occupied and UNDOF zones. UNDOF is to prevent any military forces in its zone.

Options would be having Syria send somebody across the border, in violation of the ceasefire agreement and the UNDOF mandate; having some cell in residence in Israel plant it, whether infiltrated or done by Israelis; having some Hezb folk cross the border and plant it.

None are especially appealing.

17. Yes, that's the revisionist claim,
and I've seen the arguments for it, and the evidence against it, but this wasn't in the postage-stamp sized justification for having Hezbollah's might outweight that of the government.

My ordered list of questions remains:

Was it Syrian forces crossing the UNDOF zone in violation of Syrian integrity and honor?

Was in Hezbollah crossing the border and penetrating 12 miles into Israeli-held territory?

Was it Hezbollah using Hezbollites already in Israel?

Was it Israelis working on behalf of Hezbollah.
