Poll: S.D. Voters Against Abortion Ban
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - South Dakota voters are leaning against the state's tough new ban on abortions, a poll released Monday shows.

The statewide survey of 800 registered voters found 47 percent opposed the strict ban, while 39 percent favored it. The remaining 14 percent were undecided. The poll had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

The Legislature voted overwhelmingly earlier this year to make abortion illegal in all cases - including rape and incest - unless the procedure was necessary to save the woman's life. It was to become law on July 1, but opponents gathered enough signatures to delay it and to let voters decide in November whether the ban should take effect.

If voters reject the abortion ban at the ballot box, they would effectively repeal it.

1. And?
Since when does the will of the people matter anymore?

They'll get the result they're looking for through Diebold if necessary. I'll believe that the opinions of the voters matter, once I see if they do.

8. Ah, no Diebold in SoDak
I lived in SoDak for 4 years and voted in the 2002 and 2004 elections. They use paper ballots with fill-in bubbles. The questions were laid out in a logical and easy-to-read fashion and the options were easy to read, understand, and fill in. A special holder was given to the voter to make sure that the ballots were all placed in the ballot box facing the same way, with the correct side up, for reliablity in optical scanning. In the event of a recount, each ballot is very easy to read to determine who was voted for.

Oh, maybe Diebold was in the optical scanners or something, but there were no tricks on the ballot and there is a paper trail.

If the damn Florida election boards had had all their shit together like the prairie dwellers, Gore would be in his second term and not Supremely Appointed George.

2. I hope they vote the renegade lawmakers out of office while they're at it
Looks like the majority of South Dakotans have good sense.

3. How many parents, South Dakotan or otherwise,
would want their teenage daughter to give birth to a rapist's baby?

As a mother of two daughters, I would venture to guess VERY, VERY FEW.

4. unless the people regain some semblance of rationality
and demand the same from their elected officials -- dakota and other states will get more of the same.

i'm glad to see there is rationality in general populace -- will they pull up their boot straps and do the right thing on election day?

12. Well, while I disagree with the law, I believe some things should
not be left up to the people.

Whether or not I have a right to privacy when I see my doctor should not be left up to the will of the people.

Which other human being on the planet I choose to live my life with should not be left up to the will of the people.

Rights are not up to the whims of majorities.

10. Voters, Smoters
Who cares what the peasants want?

I thought they DID have Diebold in South Dakota. They got some touch screens for handicapped voters, I think as an option for the blind. They just added these shitty things in 02.
