Gallup: Current Negativism on Iraq Echoes View of Vietnam War in 1970
Editor&Publisher: Gallup: Current Negativism on Iraq Echoes View of Vietnam War in 1970

NEW YORK An analysis released today by Frank Newport, director of The Gallup Poll, shows that current public wishes for U.S. policy in the Iraq war eerily echo attitudes about the Vietnam war in 1970.

The most recent Gallup poll this month found that 52% of adult Americans want to see all U.S. troops out of Iraq within a year, with 19% advocating immediate withdrawal. In the summer of 1970, Gallup found that 48% wanted a pullout within a year, with 23% embracing the “immediate” option. Just 7% want to send more troops now, vs. 10% then.

At present, 56% call the decision to invade Iraq a “mistake,” with 41% disagreeing. Again this echoes the view of the Vietnam war in 1970, when that exact same number, 56%, in May 1970 called it a mistake in a Gallup poll....

2. Let's hope this war doesn't last as long as Vietnam's
unlike Vietnam, this war is more dangerous in its strategic spill over effects into an entire region. The war in Iraq spells the end of America as a superpower.

3. Why is it that only 1/5 can understand that "within a year" NEVER comes?
Edited on Sat Jul-29-06 12:14 PM by kenny blankenship
If you said "LEAVE RIGHT NOW!" it would take over half a year just to get out. Told to "Get Out Now" the US occupation would leave Iraq within a year, if we're lucky. If however you say "Leave...but sometime, not right now, within a year" that time will never come. If the Executive is not forced to give up its war, forced to drop it, there will always be an excuse why "now's not the time" or "setting a timetable will only embolden the foe", and then "our dead will have given their lives in vain." Those saying "within a year" now will still be saying within a year in 2007 and 2008 and beyond. Bush himself will never willingly give up Iraq, no matter what is happening there. If your cat grabbed your canary in its teeth you wouldn't tell it to let it go sometime, sometime soon, within the next minute or else; you would force it to drop the bird RIGHT NOW. Bush is no different from a predatory animal and can't be dealt with any other way.

If you think Iraq is "not worth it" or you think it "should never have been attempted", then RIGHT NOW is when to demand that we leave. RIGHT NOW.

5. When will the press acknowledge that the "Left" was "Right" on Iraq?
