Bush: U.S. troop presence in Iraq to be increased

WASHINGTON, July 25 (Reuters) - President George W. Bush said on Tuesday the United States would boost the presence of U.S. troops and Iraqi security personnel in Baghdad in an effort to curb the violence in the capital.

Bush told reporters he and Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki discussed the plan at a meeting at the White House. He said forces would be moved to the capital from other areas of the country.

"Our military commanders tell me that this deployment will better reflect the current conditions on the ground in Iraq," Bush said.

12. You noticed too?
When I read this, I just couldn't help remembering all the vague promises...of troop withdrawals....oh we think it will happen, for sure we will bring the troops home..

Just watch. It will be impossible this November. They will be stuck with their Tar Baby in the Quicksand, pulling them in deeper and deeper.

3. I believe the US troops would be moved from other areas...
of Iraq into Baghdad, not an increase in troops. That's how I read it.

5. Stupid headline writer. Unless Bush said total forces in Iraq are rising
it is not "US troop presence in Iraq to be increased" but "US troop presence in Bagdhad to be increased", just like various generals have said.

8. Heh, I Wonder How Much Attention This Will Get in the Corporate Media?
A scant few months BEFORE the '06 elections they are INCREASING troops in Iraq? I thought for sure they would make a show of bringing some troops home to boost their chances in the elections.

You know damn well if they brought some troops home there would be propoganda galore and wall to wall coverage of the reduction. I don't think I'll be holding my breath for the wide reporting of the increase in troops.

Bush: US troop presence in Baghdad to be increased

Corrects headline to show U.S. presence in Baghdad is being increased, not U.S. presence in Iraq

14. This should raise the rate of US military deaths in Iraq,
I wonder how the generals feel about this move? Putting troops back in Baghdad in large numbers at this late date, well just chalk up another blunder by this mis-admin.

is pissing away $1 (some say $8) billion per day on Iraq. This is unsustainable both militarily and financially. When will the R's in Congress and the executive branch admit this ?

20. Somehow the words
just seem to dance without a partner. A partner say, like the much predicted "troop reduction". Deployment, troop presence in Baghdad. It just never says MORE troops to go to Iraq indefinitely. At least not for long.

And never ever remind anyone about the hints of "troop reduction" and the "Iraqi success".

21. Bush doesn't care what America thinks and why should he?
The GOP owns the voting systems. What is the point of spending any further time, energy, or money to maintain the pretense of democracy?

"The illusion of freedom will continue as long as it's profitable to continue the illusion. At the point where the illusion becomes too expensive to maintain, they will just take down the scenery, they will pull back the curtains, they will move the tables and chairs out of the way and you will see the brick wall at the back of the theater." - Frank Zappa

23. TYpical. Elections are coming up, so the killing in Iraq has to slow down
As soon as the midterms are over, they'll decide they can decrease the tropps again.

The Repubs are probably crapping their pants everytime they turn on the news.

These politicians don't care about Iraq or Afghanistan or Lebanon.

Bush: New plan to help end Iraq violence

By TOM RAUM, Associated Press Writer 43 minutes ago

WASHINGTON -
President Bush said Tuesday a new plan to increase U.S. and Iraqi forces in the besieged capital of Baghdad will help quell rising violence that is threatening
Iraq's transformation to a self-sustaining democracy.

"Obviously the violence in Baghdad is still terrible and therefore there needs to be more troops," Bush said in a White House news conference with visiting Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

Al-Maliki, on his first trip to the United States since becoming prime minister two months ago, said he and Bush agreed that training and better arming Iraqi forces as quickly as possible, particularly in the capital city, was central to efforts to stabilize the country.
