Bush considering renominating Bolton to UN post
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush is considering renominating John Bolton as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, a year after appointing him to the job over Senate objections, aides said on Thursday.

White House spokesman Tony Snow said White House officials were talking to Indiana Republican Sen. Richard Lugar, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, about renominating Bolton for the position.

The job requires Senate confirmation.

Bush gave Bolton a recess appointment last August -- meaning he appointed Bolton to the job when the Senate was in recess -- because many senators opposed the former State Department official for what they called an abrasive style.

That appointment will run out at the end of the current congressional session in January.

Senate Critic Now Backs Bolton for U.N.

WASHINGTON -- Sen. George V. Voinovich, the Ohio Republican who frustrated his GOP
colleagues by opposing President Bush's choice for U.N. ambassador, announced Thursday
he now supports John Bolton and would no longer stand in the way of his confirmation.

"My observations are that while Bolton is not perfect, he has demonstrated his ability,
especially in recent months, to work with others and follow the president's lead by working
multilaterally," Voinovich said in a statement.

The senator told reporters he believed Bolton had been "tempered" in recent months and
no longer proved to be a divisive representative to the U.N.

At the White House, presidential spokesman Tony Snow said the adminstration was talking
with Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Richard Lugar about whether Bolton should
be renominated, and what form the process should take.

12. Let's see the necon/neolib "Grand Alliance" support Bolton
How many Senators with "D" after their names will now support Bolton because he will certainly be backed by the same people that are backing Lieberman against Lamont and the bombing of civilians in Lebanon.

17. The face individuals such as Bolton show to Members of Congress is not
the same face that's seen by people who have interacted and worked with Bolton on a day-to-day basis.

John Bolton does not have the temperment to be our Representative to the United Nations. He's mediocre and ineffective, at the very least; a dictatorial idealogue at best. As a human being he's . . . well . . . let's just say he needs a great deal of improvement.

We can do a hell of a lot better than him.

21. HUH!?!? "...follow the president's lead by working multilaterally"
When has the decider worked multilaterally (much less Bolton)? Must be a different definition than what I'm thinking.

11. I'm sure "considering" is being used very loosely
Bush had and has every intention of nominating him again. They're just using the word "considering" to make it sound like Bush gives these things some thought. Bull.

13. Well, he IS doing such a good job for Mr.bush, can see why he would
'"Should the president choose to renominate him, I cannot imagine a worse message to send to the terrorists -- and to other nations deciding whether to engage in this effort -- than to drag out a possible renomination process or even replace the person our president has entrusted to lead our nation at the United Nations," Voinovich said.'

It would indeed be a bad message to send to "the terrorists" that the bush administration no longer supports them. Bad indeed. sigh

18. They're determined to keep him there at any cost
I read a little while back that even if the Senate refuses to confirm him, they're looking at other ways to keep him there, possibly in an "unpaid" position.

23. Can't he just make another recess appointment if Congress doesn't agree
He's never cared much for having checks and balances on his power so I wonder whether he'll do this again.

And Voinovich is a disappointment and sellout

but I doubt it.

Bolton is gross -- a real embarrassment to this country -- and ugly as a mud fence, to boot.
