Stonewall Dems Lift Endorsement Of Beebe For Ark. Gov.
by 365Gay.com Newscenter Staff

July 19, 2006 - 9:00 pm ET

(Little Rock, Arkansas) Stonewall Democrats of Arkansas have ripped into the party's candidate for governor accusing him of misleading and then turning his back on them.

The controversy is over Mike Beebe flip flop over a proposed bill to ban gay foster parenting.

A regulation by the Child Welfare Board banning gay fostering was struck down last month by the state Supreme Court. (story)

Prior to the ruling Beebe met with Stonewall members and according to those at the meeting said he would oppose any legislation to limit gay fostering or adopting.

The position earned him an endorsement from the statewide LGBT Democratic organization.

Immediately following ruling he refused comment on the court decision and a day later announced his support for a bill to block gays and lesbians from serving as foster parents.

4. You are supposed to support Beebe regardless, right?
After all, any Democrat is by definition better than any Republican. :sarcasm:

9. Jim Lendall.
More actual care and concern for working people in his little finger than Beebe and Hutchinson combined. Lendall has my vote.

10. LGBTs should not vote for anti-LGBT candidates regardless of party label
There is a limit to party loyalty, it ends when one asks chickens to vote for Colonel Sanders.

12. Careful, there
Your post will be deleted if you advocate holding wanna-be officeholders accountable for their stands on the issues.

13. I don't totally agree with you on this
Elections aren't only about ourselves they are about our neighbors, our children, and our society. I don't know all of the rest of this candidates positions so I don't know if I would vote for him or not. But I have voted for anti gay Democrats in the South before largely on issues of race, education, and economics. Those issues are important too and usually the Democrat is way better on them than the Republican.

15. You live in Indiana
I simply don't believe you have never faced that choice before. While MS, where I lived when I had to make that kind of choice is order of magnitudes worse, Indiana is no slouch in the anti gay sweepstakes.

16. Sorry, I'm going the opposite way. If I'm going to vote for someone to
represent me, then they need to be supportive of the majority of things I feel strongly about - obviously gay rights is pretty high on the list, but not the single issue it is for some.

But I'm really tired of holding my nose and voting. Quite plain and simply, I have yet to find a candidate who won't state a firm committment to the concept that gays are still Americans and deserve to be treated equally under the law that supports much else that I think is important either. When they want to be wishy-washy on that issue, they have this huge tendency to be wishy washy on most things - saying whatever they think the largest block of voters wants to hear, while supporting the corporate interests that fill their campaign coffers over the interests of the citizens of their state. The two just seem to go hand in hand - and I'm tired of pandering people pretending to be leaders.

7. He certainly is using it as one
That is to say, a wedge to separate gay voters from supporting him. Why is it that civil rights are always a "wedge issue" with some people?

11. Monumentally stupid
Does anyone think the electorate in Arkansas is going to be mollified by this? On any contraversial issue, no matter what it is, the absolute worse mistake you can make is alienating all sides. That is exactly what he did here. No one who gives a damn about this issue in either direction is going to vote for him because he has taken literally all sides. I would sit this one out and work for the Lt governor candidate and hope that whoever one the governor's race decided to retire.
