Lamont pulls even with Lieberman in latest poll
HAMDEN, Conn. --Democratic challenger Ned Lamont has pulled into a dead heat in his U.S. Senate race with incumbent Joe Lieberman, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released Thursday.

The poll shows Lamont ahead 51-47 percent among likely voters in the Aug. 8 Democratic primary. That compares to a 55-40 percent lead for Lieberman in a similar poll in June.

The telephone survey of 2,502 registered voters was conducted July 13-18. It has a sampling error margin of about 2 percentage points. But the error margin among the 653 likely Democratic primary voters is 3.8 percentage points, putting the candidates in a statistical dead heat.

Lamont, a multimillionaire and founder of a cable television company that has wired college campuses, has contributed a total of $2.5 million to his own campaign.

1. Good for you, Ned
Still no lawn sign. Perhaps if I gave another donation. Maybe $50 this time.

I think the most refreshing thing is to see that the grassroots still has power. It almost worked with Howard Dean, but maybe this is the start of something quite special.

2. Ned's people have been great, maybe high demand has slowed
them down delivering signs. I got two and they never asked for a dime.

3. Great
I was wondering how he was doing. So many people seem to think that Lieberman is a sure bet to lose the primary. This is encouraging, but Lieberman will not go down easily. Hopefully the Jomentum will continue, in free fall mode.

5. 51-47 is not even
With MOE at 2%.

Title should be Lamont ahead of Lieberman in latest poll.

12. This is a Statistical Tie
Glad to see Lamont leading but with a 2% MOE of 2% I believe the headline is correct. At 51% to 47% the actual result could be 49 for Liberman and 49 for Lamont. Can someone with more expertise interpreting polls verify this for us?

14. The MoE is +/- 3.8%
So it is considered a statistical tie.

11. huzzah! Yes! Yes! Yes!
I suspect that once the smell of death stinks out Lieberman's campaign he's going to find he has very very few friends (what Bill Clinton is doing shilling for this backstabber is utterly beyond me. But Bill did shill for NAFTA too so there you are). And those few that remain will keep having other things to do rather than be seen near him. I suspect the other Senator from CT will start to make himself scare.

It can't be much fun at Lieberman HQ these days. Not with this poll coming in - Lamont's gained 11 points in a month and Lieberman has dropped 8 (and Lieberman's spent big bucks to drop 8). And talking to Lieberman must be as comfortable as (to quote Hunter Thompson) "Climbing into a closet with a 200 pound water rat".

That said, Ned needs to keep running like the energizer bunny and be aware that Lieberman's going to blow negative to the mark for the rest of the campaign. They are going accuse him of everything short of baby raping and they won't be above hinting about that.

Still, Ned's greatest asset is Lieberman himself, his arrogance, his brand of holier than thou humbug, his obvious dislike for campaigning and his utter disdain for the great unwashed masses that vote will not go away, and are likely to get worse as the days go on.

Go Ned go.

17. Lieberman's been running negative ever since he noticed Ned.
Look how much good it's done him.

The only thing HoJo had going for him was that he was a "Nice guy". He's blown that.

13. Lieberman deserves to lose.
If he runs as an "independent," he can lose twice. The DSCC and DNC better not diss the Democratic voters of CT. Lamont must be strongly supported if he wins the primary.

15. I have an idea..........
let's see if we can't get Lamont elected in 2006. Then Lieberman, because he wants to remain in the senate so badly, can move to say Oklahoma and run against one of the incumbents in that state. I'd have no problem supporting him there.

16. Call me a bitter lefty,
but I hope Lieberman goes down in the primary despite any Senate control calculus. Smoking Joe is pure ego.
