WASHINGTON (AFP) - US President George W. Bush is extending an olive branch to the NAACP, agreeing for the first time to give a speech to the influential civil rights group he has sparred with throughout his presidency.
After five years of giving the cold shoulder to the group -- and enduring harsh condemnation of his policies in return -- the president now appears interested in bridge-building with the speech he is to give on Thursday.
"I think the president wants to make his voice heard," said Bush's chief spokesman, Tony Snow.
Snow said the speech to the
National Association for the Advancement of Colored People will highlight the president's "strong commitment to civil rights."
"He has an important role to play not only in making the case for civil rights, but maybe more importantly, the case for unity," said Snow.
