1. This is getting old.
I wish I could say something new or witty. This has happened so often now that words fail me. Somebody's loved one is coming home in a coffin and it just breaks me.

as to why the returning coffins are off-limits to the media.

And so it continues... :-(

http://customwire.ap.org/dynamic/stories/I/IRAQ_SOLDIERS_KILLED?SITE=OHDAY&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT

Excerpt:

Two soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division were killed and another wounded in northern Iraq early Sunday when their convoy was struck by rocket-propelled grenades and gunshots, the U.S. military said.

All three soldiers were rushed to a hospital, where two of them died, said Corp. Todd Pruden, a spokesman for the military in Baghdad.

The attack occurred near Tal Afar, just west of the northern city of Mosul and about 240 miles northwest of Baghdad, Pruden said. There were no reported enemy casualties and no arrests were made.

6. And the president raised another $2 million dollars
Edited on Sun Jul-20-03 01:58 AM by Frances
on Saturday to bring his campaign total to over $40 million.

He should have to use that money for a trust fund for the families of the slain soldiers!

On edit: I deleted a word

23. Well, it's like he told Abbas...
(when God told him to invade Afghanistan and Iraq) that he would be willing to help him and the Palestinians if they would get with the program, like now. If Abbas waited until just before the election, he could forget about Bush's help.

Hell, what do you expect from a one-track mind? That's what this creep was born to do, campaign. To hell with the "responsibilities" of being pRezident!

11. Violence is spreading to a larger area
<<Most of the recent violence has occurred in an area north and west of Baghdad called the Sunni triangle, where some support for Saddam Hussein remains. Mosul is north of the Sunni triangle and has not been the site of much previous violence.>>

the so-called 'Sunni Triangle' that the media so hypes also happens to contain roughly 70% of Iraq's population. The rest of the country is desert.

29. Mosul is a Kurdish area
One can only assume that the resistance to US occupation is nationwide and it involves the broad spectrum of Iraqi society.

The people shooting at US troops are not Saddam loyalists!

40. History repeats...
From an article by John Kifner in today's NYT:

"The public, the distinguished military analyst wrote from Baghdad, had been led "into a trap from which it will be hard to escape with dignity and honor. They have been tricked into it by a steady withholding of information," he said. "The Baghdad communiqués are belated, insincere, incomplete. Things have been far worse than we have been told, our administration more bloody and inefficient than the public knows."

He added: "We are today not far from a disaster."

Sound familiar?

That was T. E. Lawrence — Lawrence of Arabia — writing in The Sunday Times of London on Aug. 22, 1920, about the British occupation of what was then called Mesopotamia. <snip>

Things were not going well for the British in Mesopotamia. Gertrude Bell was arbitrarily drawing lines on the map to make a new country out of three former Ottoman provinces — Mosul in the north, Baghdad in the center and Basra in the south. The districts were composed, respectively, of Kurds, Sunni Muslims and Shiite Muslims, all of whom hated each other — and the British even more.

By 1920, the country was in full rebellion, from Shiite tribesmen in the south to Kurds in the north. There were some 425 deaths on the British side and an estimated 8,000 to 10,000 among the Iraqis."

before their loved ones come home? Where are the celebrity cheerleaders now? Are there any soothing the troops now? Somebody send Kid Rock and his punk ass back to Iraq and help tell the real story of what's going down there.

19. Hearts and Minds
Saw a piece on ABC News a couple of days ago: In Balad, Iraq, 4th division officer talking to Iraqs---'give information as to who mortored US soldiers or he would have tanks run over and ruin their fields and crush their houses. There will be a lot more dead Americans with this type of attitude. I'm sorry for the families of the dead soldiers, but I wonder how many of the families and soldiers support war with Iraq. Now the piper is being paid! I say get out now and give repreations to the Iraqi people. Then we need to do something about the dangerous right wing mentality that prevades our military.

25. Foolish Tactics
Looks like this is an idea taken from Sharon's tactics against the Palestinians. It hasn't worked for Israel and the U.S. Militiary is crazy if they think this type of threat or actually doing it will work. We are totally outnumbered in Iraq. If they do this I can only imagine the type of retribution he will bring down on his own men from the Iraqis.

30. Told you so
Most of what I had predicted has come true now in Iraq. Also, as I had predicted the American public only wavered in their support when American casulties rose. I stand by my contention that the American public does not care about Iraqi civilian casulties.

41. Many of us here in the American public do care
about Iraqi civilian casualties. In fact, I'd wager that most Americans reading DU are equally pained by every single injury or death this conquest has caused to either side. We may not be in the majority, but we are still very much members of the American public. Let us see what we can do about appealing to the hearts of the majority...

Edited on Sun Jul-20-03 11:18 AM by Yavin4
"Mother, mother
There's to many of you crying
Brother, brother, brother
There's far too many of you dying
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today - Yah

Father, father
We don't need to escalate
You see, war is not the answer
For only love can conquer hate
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today"

He wrote that song about the Vietnam war. It's one of the most beautiful anti-war songs ever.

36. When I woke up and saw this headline on CNN
My heart just sunk. you'd think i'd be used to it by now, almost every day there is a report of soldiers dying, but this one just got to me.

I gasped, and my 7 year old son, cuddling safely next to me in bed (thank God) asked what happened. I told him that 2 more soldiers died in Iraq, and he said "What? We aren't at war anymore!"

Sigh.

the death and violence seems routine.

Of course, it is not routine and, in fact, would not be happening to US soldiers if not for bizaare election of 2000 which brought us The Worst President in United States History.
