KITCHENER, Ont. — Former prime minister Brian Mulroney tried to contact an American cabinet secretary on behalf of Research In Motion Ltd. (TSX:RIM) during RIM's legal battle with NTP Inc., according to an internal e-mail, the Waterloo Region Record reported Saturday.
RIM hired Mulroney and his Montreal law firm, Ogilvy Renault, in late 2004 to work on the appeal of NTP's court victory over RIM, said David Long, another RIM attorney.
The hiring of Mulroney was part of RIM's all-out campaign against NTP in the U.S. courts and patent office, an effort that also involved the hiring of two former U.S. ambassadors to Canada and the successful solicitation of support from the Canadian government and U.S. administration.
According to the Jan. 7, 2005, e-mail from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, Mulroney had tried to talk to then-U.S. commerce secretary Don Evans about the patent office's review of NTP's patents.
