Indian gay prince out of closet, loses inheritance

MUMBAI, July 7 (Reuters) - An Indian prince has been disowned by his family after he publicly announced he was gay in a country where homosexuality is outlawed by a 145-year-old law.

Prince Manvendra Singh Gohil, who belongs to one of the country's richest royal families that ruled the former Rajpipla principality in the western state of Gujarat, has been disowned for "activities unacceptable to the society", one disinheritance notice placed by his parents in a newspaper said.

Last month, his parents issued notices in a Gujarati language daily withdrawing his right to the family property.

"Henceforth, no one must refer to my name as mother of Manvendra," one notice signed by his mother said. "If any individual or organisation dares to do so, it will invite contempt proceedings".

The minute this family published their statements in the newspaper, their words became
public interest, public domain....and I'm thinking about printing up some t-shirts with
that statement YOU ARE THE MOTHER OF MANVENDRA on them.

6. LOL! That was my first real laugh of the morning, thanks!
Heh heh. What I saw in my mind's eye was you hitting the POST button on your message then a puff of smoke over the horizon, a plume of water racing across the Pacific (her swimming) then a wet-haired chubby Indian mother in a sari with a kukri between her teeth and white, wild eyes, moving (as though fast-forwarded) from bush to bush, ducking behind parked cars for a microsecond, back against buildings an peeking around the corner in a fraction of a second, knocking down your front door just as you look over the posted copy. Her movements return to normal speed, you stare up from your desk in amazement still holding a morning coffee, she pulls the knife from between her teeth and the camera zooms into the darkness of her mouth as she begins to ululate her battle cry.

I think some milk came out my nose I snorted so hard at the image that flashed in my head. I don't even drink milk.

Anyway, heh heh, thanks!

9. You can't discount the fact that they may have felt culturally obligated..
...to post those messages. In India, Japan, and lots of other countries families are still very aware of their "public image".

10. Partly public image...

and partly done for some of the same reasons the wedding banns in our culture was posted publicly.

While there are many reasons to 'disown' a person, and this one is particularly disgusting and vile, but my understanding is that these announcements are for the family image, but also to make sure that people KNOW that the 'disowned' don't have an inheritance, so don't enter into marriage contracts with them and don't loan them anything if it is collaterial against the said inheritance.

This is especially useful to Indians living abroad if they want to investigate a potential wedding partner.

12. At least it helps the wife shortage
So many Indians abort female fetuses that there is a huge shortage of marriagable women there.

14. A prince indeed
"But Gohil, 40, who announced he was gay this year, says he has found happiness among Gujarat's gay community and is not interested in his inheritance.

"I could not have lived a lie forever," he told Reuters on Friday.

"I will not stake my claim to the property. I have found a family in the (gay) community and am happy working for the community," said Gohil, who runs an NGO working on HIV/AIDS among homosexuals.

"As an activist, I thought it right to come out of the closet first. Otherwise, it would have been living a lie."

Sounds like one wonderful man.

17. This guy needs to publically disown his mother. He seems to be
the more decent of the two.

18. It sounds like his parents have lost a lot more than their son has.
But everybody loses, in some form. It's good to see a prince leading the way like this. Maybe other gay people there will follow in his footsteps.
