SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Five-term Rep. Chris Cannon fought to hold on to his job Tuesday against a millionaire real estate developer who has portrayed the incumbent as soft on illegal immigration.

It's the same argument Cannon himself made 10 years ago when he unseated a Democratic incumbent. The race in the GOP primary has focused largely on who stands taller in opposition to President Bush's proposal to offer a path to citizenship for some 11 million illegal immigrants.

Challenger John Jacob also made headlines last week by suggesting that Satan has had a hand in difficulties faced by his campaign.

Cannon voted last December for a House bill that would toughen border security, criminalize people who help illegal immigrants and make being in the U.S. without the required papers a felony. But he also supports Bush's proposal for a guest-worker program.

2. Huh, the Guardian has the guy's name wrong in the title
I checked, it is Cannon, as it's written in the body of the article.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Five-term Rep. Chris Cannon survived the toughest challenge
of his political career Tuesday against a political newcomer who portrayed the
incumbent as soft on illegal immigration.

With 476 of 623 precints reporting, Cannon defeated millionaire real estate developer
John Jacob in the Republican primary 56 percent to 44 percent, or 27,115 votes to
20,934 votes.

"I hope what it means is Republicans look at this and realize we don't have to be divided
on the issue of illegal immigration," Cannon told The Associated Press.
