Senator Wants Classified Programs Review (spying on us)
WASHINGTON (AP) - The government should conduct an inquiry into damage done by the recent disclosures of intelligence programs aimed at stopping terrorists, the Senate Intelligence Committee chairman said Tuesday.

"We cannot continue to operate in a system where the government takes steps to counter terrorism while the media actively works to disclose those operations without any regard for protection of lives, sources and legal methods," said Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., who as intelligence chairman has been briefed extensively on the efforts.

In a letter, Roberts asked National Intelligence Director John Negroponte to order an assessment of damage caused by the disclosure of the government's most classified programs. He said he was particularly interested in the impact of stories on the Bush administration's warrantless surveillance program and its program to monitor terror finances.

Administration officials have publicly confirmed both programs.

1. Seeing as how they investigated enron's fleecing of CA
(well, several big companies in the energy insutry, actually) and came away with the outrageous idea that no wrongdoing had occurred... I don't hold out much hope of this being anything more than an attempt to convince those not paying too much attention that things are still hunky dory with regards to the worst administration ever.

2. He Pat
we're still waiting for your investigation into the administrations wiretapping policies and gulags, etc...
Do you think you can start up those before coming up with new investigations?

This would have been like a senate committee investigating Woodward and Bernstein rather then the illegality of the Nixon administration! AND,
we were in an occupation then too! If the GOP was in charge of the congress then, that's exactly what would have happened and we'd probably still be in Vietnam to boot!

6. Senate intelligence chief blasts media over leaks
I think this is the same story...

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee on Tuesday blasted U.S. media for exposing details of highly secretive intelligence programs and asked the Bush administration for a formal damage assessment.

Sen. Pat Roberts (news, bio, voting record), a Kansas Republican, asked U.S. intelligence chief John Negroponte to report particularly on any damage to President George W. Bush's domestic spying program and another secret program by the Treasury Department that tracks private bank records.

"Numerous, recent unauthorized disclosures of sensitive intelligence programs have directly threatened important efforts in the war against terrorism," Roberts, a staunch White House ally, said in a letter to Negroponte.

"Whether the president's Terrorist Surveillance Program or the Department of Treasury's effort to track terrorist financing, we have been unable to persuade the media to act responsibly."

I truly Hate this bush sucking fuckhead! :grr:

7. Again! A coordinated smokescreen to distract from the warrantless
wiretapping and data mining of all phone calls and emails.

Call them on it! They've rewritten the Bill of Rights for their own political purposes.

8. Just trying to keep Bush administration honest
and aboveboard.

I think that's a simple effective answer.

They didn't tell us the truth about WMDs.
They didn't tell us the truth about getting a warrant for wiretaps.
They didn't comply with the FISA law, or the Bill of Rights for that matter.
They didn't tell us the truth about firing the Plame leakers.
Just trying to keep 'em honest.
