Rendell widens lead over Swann in poll
Rendell widens lead over Swann in poll
Friday, June 23, 2006
BY SHARON SMITH
Of The Patriot-News

A Quinnipiac University poll released yesterday shows that Republican Lynn Swann trails Gov. Ed Rendell by 24 points.

The poll, which was conducted June 13-19, surveyed 1,076 Pennsylvania voters. It showed that 55 percent of those questioned said they would vote for Rendell, compared with 31 percent for Swann. The poll has a margin of error of 3 percentage points.

A May 12 Quinnipiac poll showed similar results. Rendell led Swann with 55 percent of those surveyed saying they would vote for him, compared with 33 percent saying that they would vote for Swann.

"As far as Mr. Swann, his campaign just doesn't seem to be catching fire," said Clay Richards, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

6. This is for Governor
Just sayin...

I'm glad the swing is happening though, becuase otherwise we'd have a 'blue' state with a Republican Governor, and 2 Senators. Hopefully in a few more years we'll be back to all Democratic across the board.

7. Actually, this is the Governor's race.
Rendell should win handily.

The man is clueless when it comes to political issues.

12. A football superstar...
... and until just this last January, one of the bigger stars from the 70s Steelers legacy. Now that the Steelers have won another Super Bowl, though, some of the Swann mystique is diminished.

Now if you want a *real* idiot as a political representative, you'd want Bradshaw.

4. Why would PA want a male governor with a female name anyway?

5. It's beginning to look like a not-very-Republican year in Pennsylvania.
Hey, you DU Democrats there in the Keystone State: keep up the good work.

14. Swann will be getting lots of free pub
as soon as football starts on TV. Every game, college and pro, will be filled with promos from the announcers stumping for their buddy for free.

the now-defunct steel industry. Swann has NO CHANCE IN HADES.
Not even worth writing about, really.

Maybe JoePa will praise him, but who cares? As a PSU grad, I don't listen to Paterno for political advice.

15. Sounds like
the GOP threw a loser to the wolves, one who had money and name power and race card to keep the race interesting but cheap and perhaps a sideshow to distract from the senatorial battles. Common Cause ranks Pennsylvania as DRE endangered at this stage so they can't have comparable races to expose tweaking. Better a Rendell blowout than an outrageous theft across the boards. Having one ebullient victor Governor on a bad day for Dems(like Schumer preening with his blowout on 2004) will not help the elections commission swing into action- if it even can.

Money or polls notwithstanding, the GOP seems to prefer throwing cheap absurdities against shoe-ins to deny them the enhancing dignity of a contest- until they are ready to take them down. If any of those oddities actually won their future in the party would be quickly co-opted and pocketed by someone else.
