Major powers: Iran has weeks to reply to proposal

WASHINGTON, June 21 (Reuters) - Senior officials representing the major powers have reaffirmed in a conference call that Iran should respond to their nuclear proposal within weeks not months, the U.S. State Department said on Wednesday.

The phone call involving the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China took place after Iran said it would respond by Aug. 22 to an international package seeking to persuade Tehran to end uranium enrichment, spokesman Adam Ereli told reporters.

He said the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council plus Germany agreed they had made a "very good offer to Iran and we all urge Iran to accept that proposal."

They also "reiterated a common view ... (that) we expect a response within weeks, not months" dating from when the offer was first made on June 1, Ereli said.

1. Is this supposed to be how long it will be til the Iran War starts?
As I recall, something very similar happened with Iraq.

2. And meanwhile, the likely next PM of Britain say he wants new nukes
Brown signals support for Trident

Mr Brown is expected to use his Mansion House speech to indicate his personal commitment to renewing Trident.

Estimates of the cost vary from £10bn to £25bn, depending on what form the new missiles or submarines take.

Labour had a manifesto commitment to retain an independent nuclear deterrent but it only applies until the next general election.

Mr Brown, seen as the most likely next prime minister, will speak of retaining the deterrent in the long term.

So much for the obligations of the nuclear powers in the NPT to attempt to disarm. What a marvellous example it sets for Iran.
