SAN FRANCISCO – San Francisco International is set to become the first airport in the nation to screen all passenger cargo for explosives.
The Department of Homeland Security plans to launch the $30 million pilot program later this summer at the airport and then expand it to two other airports, which weren't identified... The goal is 100 percent cargo screening nationwide, he said.
Lawrence Livermore Laboratory across the San Francisco Bay and several other national labs will help determine how best to use existing technology, some of which is in place to screen checked baggage, to screen cargo on passenger flights.
