NEARLY 1 MILLION IRAQIS FLEE SINCE 2005

WASHINGTON -- Nearly one million Iraqis have fled their country and resettled in neighboring Jordan and Syria.

A report said more than 650,000 Iraqis fled their homeland for Jordan and Syria since January 2005. The survey by the Washington-based U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants said a total of 888,000 Iraqis have fled their country, the third largest group after Palestinians and Afghans.

"The deteriorating situation in Iraq has led to the refugee outflow some predicted at the onset of the war, which has only now materialized," the report said.

The committee, in a report released on June 14, said more than 40 percent of Iraqi professionals have fled the country. Researchers cited the Sunni insurgency war, which erupted months after the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003.
