AP Ranchers add ladders to border fences

Ranchers add ladders to border fences

By LYNN BREZOSKY, Associated Press Writer 9 minutes ago

FALFURRIAS, Texas - A few Texas ranchers tired of costly repairs to cattle fences damaged by illegal immigrants have installed an easier route over the U.S.-Mexican border — ladders.

"It's an attempt to get them to use the ladders instead of tearing the fences," said Scott Pattinson, who owns one of a group of ranches known as La Copa.

La Copa is just south of a U.S. Border Patrol highway checkpoint that went up 75 miles from the border several years ago, sending migrants through the brambly scrub of nearby ranches instead.

Some immigrants walk for hours or days to skirt the checkpoints in temperatures hovering around 100 degrees. Their feet have worn visible paths through a forest of cactus and mesquite otherwise thick enough to conceal them from Border Patrol helicopters overhead and agents only a few hundred yards away.

1. *sigh* ... how about just taking down the fences
since they're a waste of time on so many levels anyway. :eyes:

22. Happy hunting at the grocery store...
Witness the skill of Mrs. Schwaby as she conceals her profile in the produce section. Careful not to disturb her prey she sneaks through toiletries and past the dairy section. Then, seizing an opportune moment she strikes with lightning speed and takes down a helpless package of lean ground chuck. There will be a great celebration back at the camp tonight.

7. Cattle fences don't require ladders
A proper stock fence might tear your blue jeans as you climb over,
not require cutting to cross, merely being waist-high.

So it begs wonder what exactly the "stock" are.

12. yes they are easy to climb, but
not made for the kind of traffic these fences probably get, hundreds of people climbing over them will stretch and break the wire.

17. yes! indeed
I had that image in mind, the "deer fence", or an "elk fence", but couldn't
conceive of a stock animal to put by the mexican border. Sounds like they and
replace those beasts with a few bengal tigers and sort the matter straight on! :-)

I expect someone will flame me for advocating the imprisonment of hooved animals.

11. They are using six foot high wire fence.
"Paul Johnson protects his 2,700-acre exotic game ranch of zebras, scimitar-horned oryx and wildebeests with about 10 miles of high wire fence, and joined his neighbors in placing ladders along the way."

The picture shows the ladder attached to the fence. It looks about six foot tall. Exotic game is more difficult to keep in as they will just tear through normal cattle fencing.

19. Ever read the warning labels on commercially produced ladders?
Smart move on Johnsons part taking the ladders down.

It would only be a matter of time before a fence jumper injured themselves on one of Johnsons home-builds and sued him for his ranch and every penny he's worth.
