Baghdad mosque bombing kills 7, wounds 18
Baghdad mosque bombing kills 7, wounds 18

June 16, 2006

BAGHDAD, Iraq --A suicide bomber struck a Shiite mosque during Friday prayers in Baghdad,
killing at least seven people and wounding 18, police said, as violence persisted despite
a driving ban and increased security measures aimed at restoring order in the capital.

The attacker was wearing an explosives belt and blew himself up at the Buratha mosque
in northern Baghdad, police Lt. Thaer Mahmoud said.

The bomber was on foot as the streets of Baghdad were largely absent of cars due to a four-
hour driving implemented to prevent violence during traditional Islamic prayers held
every Friday.

2. sad
Didn't that guy hear? Zarqawi is dead, George got him, the violence is supposed to end now.

Maybe they should ban people walking around, too.

:sarcasm:

I'm just too pissed off at the whole situation and the republicans and their attacks and talking points and... to even form a coherent thought.

4. It's safe to walk the streets now.........
"W" went here on a six hour jaunt and nothing happened to him so it MUST be safe now that Al-Zarqawi is dead. It was REALLY Al-Zarqawi that masterminded the 9-11 attacks, you know, not Bin Laden. So all is safe now and victory is at hand. God bless our pResident! :sarcasm:

6. Shoe bomber strikes Shiite mosque, killing 10
20 wounded in second attack in two months on important Baghdad mosque

A shoe bomber blew himself up inside an important Shiite Mosques during Friday prayers, killing at least 10 people and wounding 20, as violence persisted in the capital despite a massive security operation aimed at restoring order.

It was the second time the Buratha mosque has been hit in just over two months. It also was attacked during Friday prayers on April 7, when four suicide bombers, including a woman, killed 85 worshippers as they left the mosque after the main weekly service.

The U.S. military blamed that earlier attack on al-Zarqawi, the al-Qaida in Iraq leader who was killed June 7 in a U.S. airstrike. The group issued a statement Tuesday vowing to avenge al-Zarqawi’s death and threatening horrific attacks “in the coming days.”

9. Why would you bother with a "shoe" bomb in a mosque?
jeebus, you could just wear a burqha or drive a truck bomb in... quite frankly this just sounds weird.

12. Becasue those have been done already, so they check for them
From the NBC story: "The security operation in Baghdad has imposed a driving ban during Friday prayers to prevent suicide car bomb attacks, as well as a curfew."

from the BBC story:

The imam, Sheikh Jalaluddin al-Saghir, told the BBC the suicide attack appeared to have been carried out by a man who had explosives and ball bearings packed into his shoes to avoid detection in security checks.

Stringent security measures were put in place at the mosque after April's attack, in which the bombers were said to have been dressed as women.
...
He got close to the imam's position, but before the imam arrived, security staff noticed he was still wearing his shoes, which is not allowed in a mosque.

He was told to take them off, and appeared to be complying, when the bomb went off.

11. what happened to the crackdown
weren't there supposed to be 75,000 troops in the streets? I remember the media saying that the plan was working "very well" and that the violence had "dipped."
